वैशंपायन उवाच ततो वनगताः पार्थाः सायाह्ने सह कृष्णया उपविष्टाः कथाश्चक्रुर्दुःखशोकपरायणाः
M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : Thereupon the sons of Pritha with Draupadi banished to the forest, sat one evening, stricken with grief and sorrow and began to talk with one another.
प्रिया च दर्शनीया च पण्डिता च पतिव्रता ततः कृष्णा धर्मराजमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
M. N. Dutt: The beloved, beautiful, learned and faithful Draupadi addressed, the following words to the pious king (Yudhishthira).
न नूनं तस्य पापस्य दुःखमस्मासु किंचन विद्यते धार्तराष्ट्रस्य नृशंसस्य दुरात्मनः
M. N. Dutt: Draupadi said : No feeling for us exists in the mind of that vile, vicious-souled and cruel son of Dhritarashtra.
यस्त्वां राजन्मया सार्धमजिनैः प्रतिवासितम् भ्रातृभिश्च तथा सर्वैर्नाभ्यभाषत किंचन वनं प्रस्थाप्य दुष्टात्मा नान्वतप्यत दुर्मतिः
M. N. Dutt: For, that vicious-minded one, O king, having sent you along with me to the forest clad in deer-skin, feels no mortification.
आयसं हृदयं नूनं तस्य दुष्कृतकर्मणः यस्त्वां धर्मपरं श्रेष्ठं रूक्षाण्यश्रावयत्तदा
M. N. Dutt: For, the heart of that one of impious deed is made of steel since he could address harsh words to his pious eldest brother.

AI Translation: of Duryodhana, Karna, and the evil-minded Shakuni, of the fierce one, and of Duhshasana.
इतरेषां तु सर्वेषां कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम दुःखेनाभिपरीतानां नेत्रेभ्यः प्रापतज्जलम्
M. N. Dutt: O foremost of the Kurus, the other Kurus filled with sorrow, shed tears from their eyes.
इदं च शयनं दृष्ट्वा यच्चासीत्ते पुरातनम् शोचामि त्वां महाराज दुःखानर्हं सुखोचितम्
M. N. Dutt: O great king, seeing this your bed and recollecting what you had before I grieve for you, who do not deserve misery and have been brought up in every luxury.
दान्तं यच्च सभामध्ये आसनं रत्नभूषितम् दृष्ट्वा कुशबृसीं चेमां शोको मां रुन्धयत्ययम्
M. N. Dutt: Thinking of that ivory seat in your court crested with jewels and seeing this scat of Kusha grass grief assails me.
यदपश्यं सभायां त्वां राजभिः परिवारितम् तच्च राजन्नपश्यन्त्याः का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे
M. N. Dutt: I saw you in your court surrounded by the kings; seeing you without kings how can my mind have peace?
या त्वाहं चन्दनादिग्धमपश्यं सूर्यवर्चसम् सा त्वा पङ्कमलादिग्धं दृष्ट्वा मुह्यामि भारत
M. N. Dutt: O descendant of Bharata, I am beside myself on seeing you pasted with mud, you, gifted with the effulgence of sun whom I saw before pasted with sandal.
या वै त्वा कौशिकैर्वस्त्रैः शुभ्रैर्बहुधनैः पुरा दृष्टवत्यस्मि राजेन्द्र सा त्वां पश्यामि चीरिणम्
M. N. Dutt: O king of kings, I see you now clad in bark, whom I saw before clothed in white silken raiment.
यच्च तद्रुक्मपात्रीभिर्ब्राह्मणेभ्यः सहस्रशः ह्रियते ते गृहादन्नं संस्कृतं सार्वकामिकम्
M. N. Dutt: (Formerly) pure food of every kind was taken from your house, on golden plates to thousands of Brahmanas.
यतीनामगृहाणां ते तथैव गृहमेधिनाम् दीयते भोजनं राजन्नतीव गुणवत्प्रभो तच्च राजन्नपश्यन्त्याः का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे
M. N. Dutt: O lord, best food was given by you to ascetics, the houseless and those leading domestic lives, like an accomplished king.

AI Translation: I see all of them now, living in the forest on wild fare. O lord of men, my mind is not at peace, though they are not worthy of suffering.
भीमसेनमिमं चापि दुःखितं वनवासिनम् ध्यायन्तं किं न मन्युस्ते प्राप्ते काले विवर्धते
AI Translation: And this Bhimasena, who is in the forest, is also suffering. When the time comes, why does your anger not increase, as you think about him?
भीमसेनं हि कर्माणि स्वयं कुर्वाणमच्युत सुखार्हं दुःखितं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते
AI Translation: O Achyuta, when you see Bhimasena, who is worthy of happiness, suffering because he is doing the work himself, why are you not angry?
सत्कृतं विविधैर्यानैर्वस्त्रैरुच्चावचैस्तथा तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते
M. N. Dutt: Beholding him stricken with sorrow who was used to all happiness, surrounded by numerous conveyances and clothed in costly raiment, why does not your anger blaze up?
कुरूनपि हि यः सर्वान्हन्तुमुत्सहते प्रभुः त्वत्प्रसादं प्रतीक्षंस्तु सहतेऽयं वृकोदरः
M. N. Dutt: Beholding him in the forest why does not your anger blaze up, this great one is prepared to slay all Kurus in battle. In honour of your promise Vrikodara bears all this.
योऽर्जुनेनार्जुनस्तुल्यो द्विबाहुर्बहुबाहुना शरातिसर्गे शीघ्रत्वात्कालान्तकयमोपमः
AI Translation: He who is equal to Arjuna with two arms by Arjuna with many arms, In the rapid discharge of arrows, like the god of death.
यस्य शस्त्रप्रतापेन प्रणताः सर्वपार्थिवाः यज्ञे तव महाराज ब्राह्मणानुपतस्थिरे
AI Translation: By the power of your weapons, all the kings were humbled. At your sacrifice, O great king, the Brahmins were honored.
तमिमं पुरुषव्याघ्रं पूजितं देवदानवैः ध्यायन्तमर्जुनं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते
AI Translation: This tiger among men, worshipped by gods and demons, Seeing Arjuna meditating, why are you not angry?
दृष्ट्वा वनगतं पार्थमदुःखार्हं सुखोचितम् न च ते वर्धते मन्युस्तेन मुह्यामि भारत
M. N. Dutt: O king, beholding Partha used to happiness and unworthy of misery, living in the forest. Your anger is not excited, I am stricken with wonder for this.
यो देवांश्च मनुष्यांश्च सर्पांश्चैकरथोऽजयत् तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते
M. N. Dutt: O Bharata, who mounted on a single car, vanquished men and serpents. Beholding him in the forest why is not your anger excited?
यो यानैरद्भुताकारैर्हयैर्नागैश्च संवृतः प्रसह्य वित्तान्यादत्त पार्थिवेभ्यः परंतपः
AI Translation: He who was surrounded by horses and elephants of wonderful appearance, and forcibly took wealth from the kings, the scorcher of enemies,
क्षिपत्येकेन वेगेन पञ्च बाणशतानि यः तं ते वनगतं दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते
AI Translation: Who, with one arrow, can shoot five hundred arrows, When you see him in the forest, why are you not angry?
श्यामं बृहन्तं तरुणं चर्मिणामुत्तमं रणे नकुलं ते वने दृष्ट्वा कस्मान्मन्युर्न वर्धते
M. N. Dutt: Beholding him fair, able-bodied, youthful and the best of swordsmen. Nakula in exile does not your anger blaze up?

M. N. Dutt: The Kshatriya who does not manifest his energy in proper hour is disregarded by all creatures, O son of Pritha.
तत्त्वया न क्षमा कार्या शत्रून्प्रति कथंचन तेजसैव हि ते शक्या निहन्तुं नात्र संशयः
M. N. Dutt: Therefore you should by no means, vouchsafe your forgiveness to the enemies; forsooth, by your energy you may destroy them all.
तथैव यः क्षमाकाले क्षत्रियो नोपशाम्यति अप्रियः सर्वभूतानां सोऽमुत्रेह च नश्यति
M. N. Dutt: So that Kshatriya too becomes unpopular with all and meets with destruction both in this world and in the next, whose anger is not appeased when the time for forgiveness comes.
