मार्कण्डेय उवाच ततः प्रहस्तः सहसा समभ्येत्य विभीषणम् गदया ताडयामास विनद्य रणकर्कशः
M. N. Dutt: Markandeya said : Then Prahasta, harsh in battle, rushing against Vibhishana all on a sudden and sending forth a terrible yell, smote him with his mace.
स तयाभिहतो धीमान्गदया भीमवेगया नाकम्पत महाबाहुर्हिमवानिव सुस्थिरः
M. N. Dutt: (But) the intellectual Vibhishana of mighty arms, although struck with that mace (hurled) with a terrible force, did not tremble in the least and stood firm as the Himavana mountains.
ततः प्रगृह्य विपुलां शतघण्टां विभीषणः अभिमन्त्र्य महाशक्तिं चिक्षेपास्य शिरः प्रति
M. N. Dutt: Then Vibhishana, taking up a huge and mighty Javelin studded with a hundred bells and inspiring it with the mantras hurled it at the head of Prahasta.
पतन्त्या स तया वेगाद्राक्षसोऽशनिनादया हृतोत्तमाङ्गो ददृशे वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः
M. N. Dutt: (And that Javelin) falling with a (great) force like that of the thunderbolt cut off the head of Prahasta, who thereupon looked like a tree broken by the wind.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing that night-ranger (Prahasta) thus slain in the encounter, Dhumraksha rushed furiously against the monkeys.
तस्य मेघोपमं सैन्यमापतद्भीमदर्शनम् दृष्ट्वैव सहसा दीर्णा रणे वानरपुंगवाः
M. N. Dutt: The monkey-chiefs, on beholding that his terrible-looking soldiers, resembling the clouds, were rushing against them, fled from (the field of) battle.
ततस्तान्सहसा दीर्णान्दृष्ट्वा वानरपुंगवान् निर्याय कपिशार्दूलो हनूमान्पर्यवस्थितः
M. N. Dutt: Seeing those foremost of monkeys run away all on a sudden, Hanuman, the brave of monkeys rallied them and stood ready (for battle).
तं दृष्ट्वावस्थितं संख्ये हरयः पवनात्मजम् वेगेन महता राजन्संन्यवर्तन्त सर्वशः
M. N. Dutt: (And), O king, beholding the son of Pavana remaining on the battlefield, all the monkeys rallied with great haste.
ततः शब्दो महानासीत्तुमुलो लोमहर्षणः रामरावणसैन्यानामन्योन्यमभिधावताम्
M. N. Dutt: Then there arose a great and tumultuous uproar, causing the hair stand on end, as the soldiers of Rama and Ravana rushed against one another.
तस्मिन्प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे घोरे रुधिरकर्दमे धूम्राक्षः कपिसैन्यं तद्द्रावयामास पत्रिभिः
M. N. Dutt: (And) in that battle which raged hot and furious, making the field muddy with blood, Dhumraksha began to oppress the monkeyarmy with (showers of) arrows.
तं राक्षसमहामात्रमापतन्तं सपत्नजित् तरसा प्रतिजग्राह हनूमान्पवनात्मजः
M. N. Dutt: Then the son of Pavana, Hanuman, the vanquisher of his foes, quickly seized that leader of the Rakshasas who was advancing (against the monkey host).
तयोर्युद्धमभूद्घोरं हरिराक्षसवीरयोः जिगीषतोर्युधान्योन्यमिन्द्रप्रह्लादयोरिव
M. N. Dutt: And there took place, between the Rakshasa and the monkey warrior, each desirous of vanquishing the other, as dreadful a battle as that (fought) between Indra and Pralhada (in olden days).
गदाभिः परिघैश्चैव राक्षसो जघ्निवान्कपिम् कपिश्च जघ्निवान्रक्षः सस्कन्धविटपैर्द्रुमैः
M. N. Dutt: The Rakshasa smote the monkey with clubs and pikes and the monkey struck the Rakshasas with trees furnished with branches and trunks.

M. N. Dutt: Thus slain by the powerful and victorious monkeys the Rakshasas lost their hearts and fled to Lanka in (great) fear.
तेऽभिपत्य पुरं भग्ना हतशेषा निशाचराः सर्वं राज्ञे यथावृत्तं रावणाय न्यवेदयन्
M. N. Dutt: And the surviving might-wanderers, who fled (from the battle-field), reaching the city, informed king Ravana of all that had happened.
श्रुत्वा तु रावणस्तेभ्यः प्रहस्तं निहतं युधि धूम्राक्षं च महेष्वासं ससैन्यं वानरर्षभैः
AI Translation: Hearing from them that Prahasta had been killed in battle, and that Dhūmrāksha, the great archer, along with his army, had been killed by the bulls among monkeys,
सुदीर्घमिव निःश्वस्य समुत्पत्य वरासनात् उवाच कुम्भकर्णस्य कर्मकालोऽयमागतः
AI Translation: Having sighed deeply, he rose from his excellent seat and said, "The time for Kumbhakarna's duty has come.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा विविधैर्वादित्रैः सुमहास्वनैः शयानमतिनिद्रालुं कुम्भकर्णमबोधयत्
M. N. Dutt: Saying this, he awakened Kumbhakarna by means of various instruments emitting loud sounds, from his deep and prolonged sleep.
प्रबोध्य महता चैनं यत्नेनागतसाध्वसः स्वस्थमासीनमव्यग्रं विनिद्रं राक्षसाधिपः ततोऽब्रवीद्दशग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णं महाबलम्
M. N. Dutt: And when Kumbhakarna, who was aroused by great exertions, was comfortably seated, recovered consciousness and self-possession, the terrified lord of the Rakshasas, the tenheaded (Ravana) addressed Kumbhakarna endued with a giant strength thus, "O Kumbhakarna, you are indeed happy who enjoy such a (prolonged) sleep.
धन्योऽसि यस्य ते निद्रा कुम्भकर्णेयमीदृशी य इमं दारुणं कालं न जानीषे महाभयम्
AI Translation: You are blessed, whose sleep is like this, O Kumbhakarna. You do not know this terrible time of great fear.
एष तीर्त्वार्णवं रामः सेतुना हरिभिः सह अवमन्येह नः सर्वान्करोति कदनं महत्
AI Translation: This Rama, having crossed the ocean with the monkeys, despises us all and is causing great destruction.
मया ह्यपहृता भार्या सीता नामास्य जानकी तां मोक्षयिषुरायातो बद्ध्वा सेतुं महार्णवे
AI Translation: For I have abducted his wife, Sita by name, the daughter of Janaka. I have come to set her free, having built a bridge across the great ocean.
तेन चैव प्रहस्तादिर्महान्नः स्वजनो हतः तस्य नान्यो निहन्तास्ति त्वदृते शत्रुकर्शन
AI Translation: And by him, Prahasta and others, our great kinsmen were killed. And there is no other slayer of him than you, O destroyer of enemies.
स दंशितोऽभिनिर्याय त्वमद्य बलिनां वर रामादीन्समरे सर्वाञ्जहि शत्रूनरिंदम
M. N. Dutt: O scourage of your enemies, there is no other person capable of slaying him than you. O bravest of the brave, do you (therefore) march out this day donning your mail and O tormentor of foes, slay in battle all your enemies, Rama and others.
दूषणावरजौ चैव वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनौ तौ त्वां बलेन महता सहितावनुयास्यतः
M. N. Dutt: The two younger brothers of Dushana, Vajravega and Pramathin, accompanied by a mighty army will follow you."
इत्युक्त्वा राक्षसपतिः कुम्भकर्णं तरस्विनम् संदिदेशेतिकर्तव्ये वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनौ
M. N. Dutt: Thus addressing the mighty Kumbhakarna, the lord of the Rakshasas pointed out to Vajravega and Pramathin what they should do.
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु तौ वीरौ रावणं दूषणानुजौ कुम्भकर्णं पुरस्कृत्य तूर्णं निर्ययतुः पुरात्
M. N. Dutt: And those two heroes, the younger brothers of Dushana saying to Ravana “It shall be so" (i.e. you orders shall be carried out) soon marched out of the city with Kumbhakarna at their head.
