धृतराष्ट्र उवाच राजपुत्रैः परिवृतस्तथामात्यैश्च संजय उपारोप्य रथे कर्णं निर्यातो मधुसूदनः

M. N. Dutt: Dhritarashtra said Surrounded by princes and by dependents, O Sanjaya, did Madhusudana (Krishna) go away making Karna ascend his chariot.

किमब्रवीद्रथोपस्थे राधेयं परवीरहा कानि सान्त्वानि गोविन्दः सूतपुत्रे प्रयुक्तवान्

M. N. Dutt: What did that one god immeasurable soul, that slayer of heroes on the enemy's side, say to the son of Radha? What comforting words did Govinda say to the son of Suta?

ओघमेघस्वनः काले यत्कृष्णः कर्णमब्रवीत् मृदु वा यदि वा तीक्ष्णं तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

M. N. Dutt: Speaking with the roar of cloud during the rains, what Krishna told Karna, in words sharp or mind, tell me, O Sanjaya.

संजय उवाच आनुपूर्व्येण वाक्यानि श्लक्ष्णानि च मृदूनि च प्रियाणि धर्मयुक्तानि सत्यानि च हितानि च

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said In due order those words which were sharp and mild, sweet, leading to virtue, truthful and conducive to benefit,

हृदयग्रहणीयानि राधेयं मधुसूदनः यान्यब्रवीदमेयात्मा तानि मे शृणु भारत

M. N. Dutt: And acceptable to the heart, which the slayer of Madhu, that one of immeasurable soul said to the son of Radha-hear from me, O Bharata.

वासुदेव उवाच उपासितास्ते राधेय ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः तत्त्वार्थं परिपृष्टाश्च नियतेनानसूयया

M. N. Dutt: Vasudeva said Many Brahmanas conversant with the Vedas have been worshipped by you, O son of Radha and they have also been asked about truth by you with your mind attentive and free from jealousy.

त्वमेव कर्ण जानासि वेदवादान्सनातनान् त्वं ह्येव धर्मशास्त्रेषु सूक्ष्मेषु परिनिष्ठितः

M. N. Dutt: You, O Karna, Karna, know the eternal instruction of the Vedas, and you are fully conversant with all the subtleties of the holy books.

कानीनश्च सहोढश्च कन्यायां यश्च जायते वोढारं पितरं तस्य प्राहुः शास्त्रविदो जनाः

M. N. Dutt: The two classes of sons called Kanina and Sahoda, which are begotten on a girl (before her marriage) have for their father, the man married by their mother-so it is said by people conversant with holy books.

सोऽसि कर्ण तथा जातः पाण्डोः पुत्रोऽसि धर्मतः निग्रहाद्धर्मशास्त्राणामेहि राजा भविष्यसि

M. N. Dutt: You, O Karna, are born in that way and you are therefore morally the son of Pandu; and according to the rulings of the holy books, come and be a king.

पितृपक्षे हि ते पार्था मातृपक्षे च वृष्णयः द्वौ पक्षावभिजानीहि त्वमेतौ पुरुषर्षभ

M. N. Dutt: On your father's side are the sons of Pritha and on your mother's side are the Vrishnis; and know that these two races to belong to your own side, O best among men.

मया सार्धमितो यातमद्य त्वां तात पाण्डवाः अभिजानन्तु कौन्तेयं पूर्वजातं युधिष्ठिरात्

M. N. Dutt: Let the sons of Pandu, my dear friend, know you, accompanying me from here to be the son of Kunti born before Yudhishthira,

पादौ तव ग्रहीष्यन्ति भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः द्रौपदेयास्तथा पञ्च सौभद्रश्चापराजितः

M. N. Dutt: The king and princes, assembled on the side of the Pandayas, will accept your feet as also all the Andhakas and the Vrishnis.

राजानो राजपुत्राश्च पाण्डवार्थे समागताः पादौ तव ग्रहीष्यन्ति सर्वे चान्धकवृष्णयः

M. N. Dutt: The five Pandava brothers will accept your feet, as also the five sons of Draupadi as also the son of Subhadra who has never sustained a defeat.

हिरण्मयांश्च ते कुम्भान्राजतान्पार्थिवांस्तथा ओषध्यः सर्वबीजानि सर्वरत्नानि वीरुधः

AI Translation: And the golden pots, and the silver ones, and the earthen ones, The herbs, all the seeds, all the jewels, and the creepers,

राजन्या राजकन्याश्चाप्यानयन्त्वभिषेचनम् षष्ठे च त्वां तथा काले द्रौपद्युपगमिष्यति

AI Translation: Let the princes and princesses bring the water for the consecration. And in the sixth month, Droupadi will come to you.

गृहीत्वा व्यजनं श्वेतं धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः उपान्वारोहतु रथं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः

AI Translation: Taking the white fan, the righteous one of firm vows, May Kunti's son Yudhishthira ascend the chariot.

छत्रं च ते महच्छ्वेतं भीमसेनो महाबलः अभिषिक्तस्य कौन्तेय कौन्तेयो धारयिष्यति

AI Translation: And the great white umbrella, Bhimasena, the mighty, will hold for you, O son of Kunti, when you are consecrated.

किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषं वैयाघ्रपरिवारणम् रथं श्वेतहयैर्युक्तमर्जुनो वाहयिष्यति

AI Translation: With the sound of hundreds of bells, surrounded by tigers, Arjuna will ride the chariot yoked to white horses.

अभिमन्युश्च ते नित्यं प्रत्यासन्नो भविष्यति नकुलः सहदेवश्च द्रौपदेयाश्च पञ्च ये

AI Translation: And Abhimanyu will always be near you. And Nakula, Sahadeva, and the five sons of Draupadi,

पाञ्चालास्त्वानुयास्यन्ति शिखण्डी च महारथः अहं च त्वानुयास्यामि सर्वे चान्धकवृष्णयः दाशार्हाः परिवारास्ते दाशार्णाश्च विशां पते

M. N. Dutt: I too shall follow you as also all the Andhakas and the Vrishinis and the members of the Dasharha race as also of the Dasharna race will be among the members of your family, O lord of the universe.

भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं महाबाहो भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवैः जपैर्होमैश्च संयुक्तो मङ्गलैश्च पृथग्विधैः

M. N. Dutt: Enjoy the kingdom, O you of long arms, in company with your brothers, the sons of Pandu ever practising devotion and Homa and the several sorts of auspicious ceremonies.

M. N. Dutt: Let professional bards and singers also sing your praise in various songs and let the Pandavas proclaim the victory of the Vasusenas.

स त्वं परिवृतः पार्थैर्नक्षत्रैरिव चन्द्रमाः प्रशाधि राज्यं कौन्तेय कुन्तीं च प्रतिनन्दय

M. N. Dutt: Surrounded by the sons of Pritha as the moon is by the stars, rule over this kingdom, O son of Kunti and delight the heart of Kunti.

मित्राणि ते प्रहृष्यन्तु व्यथन्तु रिपवस्तथा सौभ्रात्रं चैव तेऽद्यास्तु भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवैः

M. N. Dutt: Let your friends rejoice in the same way let your enemies feel pained; let there be today brotherly feelings with your brothers, the sons of Pandu.
