संजय उवाच ततः क्रुद्धा महाराज सौबलस्य पदानुगाः त्यक्त्वा जीवितमाक्रन्दे पाण्डवान्पर्यवारयन्
M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said After this, the followers of Subala's son, O king, were worked up with rage. Prepared to sacrifice their lives in that dreadful encounter, they began to oppose the Pandavas.
तानर्जुनः प्रत्यगृह्णात्सहदेवजये धृतः भीमसेनश्च तेजस्वी क्रुद्धाशीविषदर्शनः
M. N. Dutt: Resolved to help Sahadeva in his victory, the energetic Arjuna and Bhimasena, resembling an infuriated venomous serpent, received those warriors.
शक्त्यृष्टिप्रासहस्तानां सहदेवं जिघांसताम् संकल्पमकरोन्मोघं गाण्डीवेन धनंजयः
M. N. Dutt: With his Gandiva, Dharianjaya baffled the object of those warrior who, armed with darts and swords and lances, desired to kill Sahadeva.
प्रगृहीतायुधान्बाहून्योधानामभिधावताम् भल्लैश्चिच्छेद बीभत्सुः शिरांस्यपि हयानपि
M. N. Dutt: Vibhatsu, with his broad-headed arrows, cut off the horses, the heads and the arms, with weapons in grasp, of those rushing warriors.
ते हताः प्रत्यपद्यन्त वसुधां विगतासवः त्वरिता लोकवीरेण प्रहताः सव्यसाचिना
M. N. Dutt: The powerful horses of those great heroes, struck by Savyasachin, dropped down on the earth, dead.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा दृष्ट्वा स्वबलसंक्षयम् हतशेषान्समानीय क्रुद्धो रथशतान्विभो
AI Translation: Then King Duryodhana, seeing the destruction of his army, gathered the remaining soldiers and angrily sent out a hundred chariots, O Lord.
कुञ्जरांश्च हयांश्चैव पादातांश्च परंतप उवाच सहितान्सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्र इदं वचः
AI Translation: O scorcher of enemies, he spoke to the elephants, horses and foot soldiers, all of them together, these words.
समासाद्य रणे सर्वान्पाण्डवान्ससुहृद्गणान् पाञ्चाल्यं चापि सबलं हत्वा शीघ्रं निवर्तत
AI Translation: Having defeated all the Pāṇḍavas and their allies in battle, and having killed the Panchāla army, quickly return.
तस्य ते शिरसा गृह्य वचनं युद्धदुर्मदाः प्रत्युद्ययू रणे पार्थांस्तव पुत्रस्य शासनात्
M. N. Dutt: Respectfully obeying that mandate, those invincible warriors proceeded once against the Parthas in that battle.
तानभ्यापततः शीघ्रं हतशेषान्महारणे शरैराशीविषाकारैः पाण्डवाः समवाकिरन्
M. N. Dutt: The Pandavas, however, enshrouded with their arrows resembling venomous snakes, all the remnant of the Kaurava army, that thus rushed quickly against them in that dreadful battle. more
तत्सैन्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ मुहूर्तेन महात्मभिः अवध्यत रणं प्राप्य त्रातारं नाभ्यविन्दत प्रतिष्ठमानं तु भयान्नावतिष्ठत दंशितम्
M. N. Dutt: That army, O Bharata chief, as it came to battle, was in no time killed by those great warriors, for it had no protector.
अश्वैर्विपरिधावद्भिः सैन्येन रजसा वृते न प्राज्ञायन्त समरे दिशश्च प्रदिशस्तथा
AI Translation: With the horses running around, the army covered in dust, In the battle, the directions and sub-directions were not recognized.
ततस्तु पाण्डवानीकान्निःसृत्य बहवो जनाः अभ्यघ्नंस्तावकान्युद्धे मुहूर्तादिव भारत ततो निःशेषमभवत्तत्सैन्यं तव भारत
AI Translation: Then many people, having come out from the Pāṇḍava army, attacked your army in the battle, as if for a moment, Bhārata. Then that army of yours became completely destroyed, Bhārata.
अक्षौहिण्यः समेतास्तु तव पुत्रस्य भारत एकादश हता युद्धे ताः प्रभो पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः
AI Translation: O descendant of Bharata, the combined forces of your son were eleven akṣauhiṇīs. O lord, in the battle, they were killed by the Pāṇḍavas and Srīñjayas.
तेषु राजसहस्रेषु तावकेषु महात्मसु एको दुर्योधनो राजन्नदृश्यत भृशं क्षतः
M. N. Dutt: Amongst those thousands and thousands of great kings belonging to your party, only Duryodhana now, O king, exceedingly mangled, survives.
ततो वीक्ष्य दिशः सर्वा दृष्ट्वा शून्यां च मेदिनीम् विहीनः सर्वयोधैश्च पाण्डवान्वीक्ष्य संयुगे
AI Translation: Then, looking in all directions, seeing the empty earth, deprived of all warriors, and seeing the Pandavas in battle,

M. N. Dutt: Dhritarashtra said When my soldiers were killed and our camp made entirely empty, what was the strength. O Suta, of the remnant the Pandavas army? 1 desire of know this. Therefore, tell me O Sanjaya, for you are a skillful narrator.
यच्च दुर्योधनो मन्दः कृतवांस्तनयो मम बलक्षयं तथा दृष्ट्वा स एकः पृथिवीपतिः
M. N. Dutt: Tell me also, O Sanjaya, that which was done by my son, the wicked Duryodhana, that king of the earth, the sole survivor of so many men, when he saw his army entirely destroyed.
संजय उवाच रथानां द्वे सहस्रे तु सप्त नागशतानि च पञ्च चाश्वसहस्राणि पत्तीनां च शतं शताः
AI Translation: Sanjaya said: There were two thousand chariots, seven hundred elephants, five thousand horses, and one hundred thousand infantry.
एतच्छेषमभूद्राजन्पाण्डवानां महद्बलम् परिगृह्य हि यद्युद्धे धृष्टद्युम्नो व्यवस्थितः

M. N. Dutt: Seeing his enemies roaring aloud and the destruction of his own army, that lord of earth Duryodhana, without a comrade, left off his seven slain horse and fled from the field with face turned eastwards.

M. N. Dutt: Hearing these words of Vyasa, the grandson of Shini joined his hands and then setting me free, said to me-Peace to you, O Sanjaya, you may go away.

M. N. Dutt: Permitted by him, myself then putting off my armour and surrendering my weapons, started in the evening for the city, my limbs covered with blood.

M. N. Dutt: After I had come about two miles O king I beheld Duryodhana, standing alone, mace in hand and greatly wounded.

M. N. Dutt: His eyes were full of tears and, therefore, he could not see me. I stood depressed before him. He saw me but could not recognise me.

M. N. Dutt: Having reflected for a moment and regained his consciousness he enquired of me after his brother and his soldiers.
तस्मै तदहमाचक्षं सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् भ्रातॄंश्च निहतान्सर्वान्सैन्यं च विनिपातितम्
M. N. Dutt: I had seen everything with my eyes and therefore, told him everything viz., that his brothers had all been killed and that his entire army destroyed.

M. N. Dutt: I told the king that we had that time only three car-warriors left alive, for Vedavyasa told me so when I set out (froin the Pandaya camp).

AI Translation: Having sighed deeply and looked around again and again, he touched me on the shoulder with his hand and said to you, "Your son"
त्वदन्यो नेह संग्रामे कश्चिज्जीवति संजय द्वितीयं नेह पश्यामि ससहायाश्च पाण्डवाः
AI Translation: No one other than you will survive in this battle, Sanjaya. I do not see a second one, along with the Pandavas and their allies.

M. N. Dutt: Shorn of friends, deprived of sons and brothers and seeing his kingdom taken by the Pandavas who is there like me that would desire to live.
आचक्षेथाः सर्वमिदं मां च मुक्तं महाहवात् अस्मिंस्तोयह्रदे सुप्तं जीवन्तं भृशविक्षतम्
M. N. Dutt: Say all this to the king and tell him further that I have escaped with life from that dreadful battle and that, alive, though exceedingly mangled, I shall live within the lake."

M. N. Dutt: Saying this to me, O king, the king, entered that lake. By his power of illusion king Duryodhana charmed the waters of the lake, making room for him.
तस्मिन्ह्रदं प्रविष्टे तु त्रीन्रथाञ्श्रान्तवाहनान् अपश्यं सहितानेकस्तं देशं समुपेयुषः
M. N. Dutt: After he had entered that lake, myself, without anybody on my side, saw those three car-warriors coming together there with their tired animals.
कृपं शारद्वतं वीरं द्रौणिं च रथिनां वरम् भोजं च कृतवर्माणं सहिताञ्शरविक्षतान्
M. N. Dutt: They were Kripa, the son of Saradvat and the heroic Ashvatthaman, that best of carwarriors and Kritavarman of Bhoja's race. Wounded with arrows, all of them came together there.
ते सर्वे मामभिप्रेक्ष्य तूर्णमश्वानचोदयन् उपयाय च मामूचुर्दिष्ट्या जीवसि संजय
M. N. Dutt: Seeing me, they all urged their horses to greater speed and coming up to me, said-By good luck, O Sanjaya, you are still alive.
अपृच्छंश्चैव मां सर्वे पुत्रं तव जनाधिपम् कच्चिद्दुर्योधनो राजा स नो जीवति संजय
M. N. Dutt: All of them then enquired after your son, saying—"Is our king Duryodhana still alive, O Sanjaya?"
आख्यातवानहं तेभ्यस्तदा कुशलिनं नृपम् तच्चैव सर्वमाचक्षं यन्मां दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ह्रदं चैवाहमाचष्ट यं प्रविष्टो नराधिपः
M. N. Dutt: I then told them that the king was physically well. I also related to them everything that Duryodhana had said to me. I also pointed out to them the lake where the king had entered.
अश्वत्थामा तु तद्राजन्निशम्य वचनं मम तं ह्रदं विपुलं प्रेक्ष्य करुणं पर्यदेवयत्
AI Translation: O king, Ashvatthama heard those words of mine. Looking at that vast lake, he lamented piteously.
अहो धिङ्न स जानाति जीवतोऽस्मान्नराधिपः पर्याप्ता हि वयं तेन सह योधयितुं परान्
AI Translation: Alas! That king does not know that we are alive. We are quite capable of fighting with him against the enemy.
ते तु तत्र चिरं कालं विलप्य च महारथाः प्राद्रवन्रथिनां श्रेष्ठा दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुसुतान्रणे
M. N. Dutt: Having wept there for a long time, those great car-warriors fled away seeing the sons of Pandu.
ते तु मां रथमारोप्य कृपस्य सुपरिष्कृतम् सेनानिवेशमाजग्मुर्हतशेषास्त्रयो रथाः
M. N. Dutt: Those three car-warriors, the remnant of our army, took me up on the well-adorned car of Kripa and then set out for the Kuru camp.
तत्र गुल्माः परित्रस्ताः सूर्ये चास्तमिते सति सर्वे विचुक्रुशुः श्रुत्वा पुत्राणां तव संक्षयम्
M. N. Dutt: The sun had set a little before. Learning that all your sons had been killed the troops, forming the outposts of the camp, wept aloud.
ततो वृद्धा महाराज योषितां रक्षणो नराः राजदारानुपादाय प्रययुर्नगरं प्रति
M. N. Dutt: Then, O king, the old men, that had been engaged to look after the ladies of the royal household, set out for the city, taking the princesses after them.
तत्र विक्रोशतीनां च रुदतीनां च सर्वशः प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दः श्रुत्वा तद्बलसंक्षयम्
M. N. Dutt: The attendants and ladies wept aloud when they heard of the destruction of the whole army.
ततस्ता योषितो राजन्क्रन्दन्त्यो वै मुहुर्मुहुः कुरर्य इव शब्देन नादयन्त्यो महीतलम्
M. N. Dutt: O king, crying ceaselessly, the women caused the earth to resound with their voices like a warm of she-ospreys.
आजघ्नुः करजैश्चापि पाणिभिश्च शिरांस्युत लुलुवुश्च तदा केशान्क्रोशन्त्यस्तत्र तत्र ह
M. N. Dutt: They tore their bodies with their nails and struck their heads with their hands and loosened their braids, crying all the while aloud.
हाहाकारविनादिन्यो विनिघ्नन्त्य उरांसि च क्रोशन्त्यस्तत्र रुरुदुः क्रन्दमाना विशां पते
M. N. Dutt: Filling the sky with exclamations of grief and beating their breasts, they cried aloud and wept, O king.
ततो दुर्योधनामात्याः साश्रुकण्ठा भृशातुराः राजदारानुपादाय प्रययुर्नगरं प्रति
M. N. Dutt: Then the friends of Duryodhana, deeply afflicted and their voice suppressed by their tears, started for the city, taking the royal ladies with them.
वेत्रजर्झरहस्ताश्च द्वाराध्यक्षा विशां पते शयनीयानि शुभ्राणि स्पर्ध्यास्तरणवन्ति च समादाय ययुस्तूर्णं नगरं दाररक्षिणः
M. N. Dutt: The camp-guards quickly fled towards the city, taking with them many white beds covered with rich sheets.
आस्थायाश्वतरीयुक्तान्स्यन्दनानपरे जनाः स्वान्स्वान्दारानुपादाय प्रययुर्नगरं प्रति
M. N. Dutt: Others, Placing their wives on cars drawn my mules, set out for the city.
अदृष्टपूर्वा या नार्यो भास्करेणापि वेश्मसु ददृशुस्ता महाराज जना यान्तीः पुरं प्रति
M. N. Dutt: Those ladies, O king, who were not before seen even by the sun, were not, as they started for the city, exposed to the view of the common people.
ताः स्त्रियो भरतश्रेष्ठ सौकुमार्यसमन्विताः प्रययुर्नगरं तूर्णं हतस्वजनबान्धवाः
M. N. Dutt: Those women, O head of the Bharatas, who were very delicate, now proceeded quickly towards the city, having lost their dear ones and kinsmen.
आ गोपालाविपालेभ्यो द्रवन्तो नगरं प्रति ययुर्मनुष्याः संभ्रान्ता भीमसेनभयार्दिताः
M. N. Dutt: The very cowherds and shepherds and common men, stricken with panic for the fear of Bhimasena, fled towards the city.
अपि चैषां भयं तीव्रं पार्थेभ्योऽभूत्सुदारुणम् प्रेक्षमाणास्तदान्योन्यमाधावन्नगरं प्रति
M. N. Dutt: They were also filled with a great fear of the Parthas. Looking at one another, all of them fled towards the city.
तस्मिंस्तदा वर्तमाने विद्रवे भृशदारुणे युयुत्सुः शोकसंमूढः प्राप्तकालमचिन्तयत्
M. N. Dutt: During that general flight accompanied with fear, Yuyutsu, beside himself with grief, thought upon what he should do under the present circumstances.
जितो दुर्योधनः संख्ये पाण्डवैर्भीमविक्रमैः एकादशचमूभर्ता भ्रातरश्चास्य सूदिताः हताश्च कुरवः सर्वे भीष्मद्रोणपुरःसराः
