अर्जुन उवाच कारणं ब्रूहि गन्धर्व किं तद्येन स्म धर्षिताः यान्तो ब्रह्मविदः सन्तः सर्वे रात्रावरिंदम
M. N. Dutt: O Gandharva, we are all chastisers of foes; we are all learned in the Vedas and we are all) virtuous. Tell us why we were censured by you when travelling at night.
गन्धर्व उवाच अनग्नयोऽनाहुतयो न च विप्रपुरस्कृताः यूयं ततो धर्षिताः स्थ मया पाण्डवनन्दन
M. N. Dutt: The Gandharva said : O sons of Pandu, you do not keep fire; you have no wives; you have no Brahmanas walking before you; therefore you were censured by me.
यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगमानवाः विस्तरं कुरुवंशस्य श्रीमतः कथयन्ति ते
M. N. Dutt: The Yakshas, the Rakshasas, the Gandharvas, the Pishachas, the Uragas and the Danavas are wise and intelligent. They speak much of the Kury race.

M. N. Dutt: While roaming over the earth attired in her ocean-cloth, I myself have seen the great prowess of your race.
वेदे धनुषि चाचार्यमभिजानामि तेऽर्जुन विश्रुतं त्रिषु लोकेषु भारद्वाजं यशस्विनम्
M. N. Dutt: O Arjuna, I personally know your preceptor, the illustrious son of Bharadvaja (Drona), who is celebrated in the three worlds for his learning in the Vedas and the science of archery.

AI Translation: They are divine, great-souled, best of all weapon-bearers. You are brothers, heroes, all of you of good conduct.
उत्तमां तु मनोबुद्धिं भवतां भावितात्मनाम् जानन्नपि च वः पार्थ कृतवानिह धर्षणाम्
AI Translation: But you, whose souls are purified, have the highest wisdom and understanding. O Partha, even though I knew you, I have still tested you.
स्त्रीसकाशे च कौरव्य न पुमान्क्षन्तुमर्हति धर्षणामात्मनः पश्यन्बाहुद्रविणमाश्रितः
M. N. Dutt: O descendant of Kuru, no man, possessing strength of arms, ought to bear with patience any ill usage before his wife.
नक्तं च बलमस्माकं भूय एवाभिवर्धते यतस्ततो मां कौन्तेय सदारं मन्युराविशत्
M. N. Dutt: O son of Kunti, our strength specially increases at the time of night. As I was accompanied by my wife, I was filled with wrath.
सोऽहं त्वयेह विजितः संख्ये तापत्यवर्धन येन तेनेह विधिना कीर्त्यमानं निबोध मे
M. N. Dutt: O best of all vow-observing men, I was vanquished by you in battle; hear from me the reasons for with I was discomfited.
ब्रह्मचर्यं परो धर्मः स चापि नियतस्त्वयि यस्मात्तस्मादहं पार्थ रणेऽस्मिन्विजितस्त्वया
M. N. Dutt: Brahmacharya is a great virtue, you are in it (leAding that mode of life). O Partha it is for this that I was defeated by you in battle.
यस्तु स्यात्क्षत्रियः कश्चित्कामवृत्तः परंतप नक्तं च युधि युध्येत न स जीवेत्कथंचन
M. N. Dutt: O chastiser of foes, if any Kshatriya, engaged in the exercise of his desire, fight with us at night, he can never escape form us with his life.
यस्तु स्यात्कामवृत्तोऽपि राजा तापत्य संगरे जयेन्नक्तंचरान्सर्वान्स पुरोहितधूर्गतः
M. N. Dutt: O Partha, a Kshatriya, engaged in the exercise of his desire, may defeat all the wanderers of night (as we are), if he is sanctified by Brahma and if he assigns the cares of his state to his priest.
तस्मात्तापत्य यत्किंचिन्नृणां श्रेय इहेप्सितम् तस्मिन्कर्मणि योक्तव्या दान्तात्मानः पुरोहिताः
AI Translation: Therefore, the priests, who have controlled their souls, should be employed in that rite which is desired by the people for their welfare.
वेदे षडङ्गे निरताः शुचयः सत्यवादिनः धर्मात्मानः कृतात्मानः स्युर्नृपाणां पुरोहिताः
AI Translation: The priests of the kings should be pure, devoted to the six-limbed Veda, truthful, with the self controlled by dharma.
जयश्च नियतो राज्ञः स्वर्गश्च स्यादनन्तरम् यस्य स्याद्धर्मविद्वाग्मी पुरोधाः शीलवाञ्शुचिः
M. N. Dutt: That king becomes ever victorious (in this world) and obtains heaven in the next, who has a priest, who is learned in the precepts of morals, who is a master of words and who is pure and well-behaved.
लाभं लब्धुमलब्धं हि लब्धं च परिरक्षितुम् पुरोहितं प्रकुर्वीत राजा गुणसमन्वितम्
M. N. Dutt: The king should always select accomplished priest who can protect what he has and acquires what he has not.
पुरोहितमते तिष्ठेद्य इच्छेत्पृथिवीं नृपः प्राप्तुं मेरुवरोत्तंसां सर्वशः सागराम्बराम्
M. N. Dutt: He, who desires his own prosperity, should ever be guided by his priest; he may then acquire the whole earth attired in her oceancloth.
न हि केवलशौर्येण तापत्याभिजनेन च जयेदब्राह्मणः कश्चिद्भूमिं भूमिपतिः क्वचित्
M. N. Dutt: O descendant of Tapati, a king, who is without a Brahmana, can never acquire any land by his bravery or nobility of birth only.
तस्मादेवं विजानीहि कुरूणां वंशवर्धन ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं राज्यं शक्यं पालयितुं चिरम्
M. N. Dutt: O spreader of the Kuru race, therefore, know that the kingdoms with Brahmanas at their heads can be retained for long.
