धृतराष्ट्र उवाच अहमप्येवमेवैतच्चिन्तयामि यथा युवाम् विवेक्तुं नाहमिच्छामि त्वाकारं विदुरं प्रति

M. N. Dutt: Dhritarashtra said : I desire to act exactly as you desire, but I do not wish to show my mental thoughts to Vidura even by my demeanour.

अतस्तेषां गुणानेव कीर्तयामि विशेषतः नावबुध्येत विदुरो ममाभिप्रायमिङ्गितैः

M. N. Dutt: Therefore, I was highly applauding them, (the Pandavas), so that Vidura may not know my real desire even by a sign.

यच्च त्वं मन्यसे प्राप्तं तद्ब्रूहि त्वं सुयोधन राधेय मन्यसे त्वं च यत्प्राप्तं तद्ब्रवीहि मे

M. N. Dutt: O Duryodhana, as this is the (proper) time, tell me, therefore, what is in your mind and also, in the mind of the son of Radha (Karna.)

दुर्योधन उवाच अद्य तान्कुशलैर्विप्रैः सुकृतैराप्तकारिभिः कुन्तीपुत्रान्भेदयामो माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ

M. N. Dutt: Duryodhana said : Let us by the help of trusted and skillful Brahmanas privately create dissensions amongst the Pandavas, a quarrel between the sons of Kunti and those of Madri.

अथ वा द्रुपदो राजा महद्भिर्वित्तसंचयैः पुत्राश्चास्य प्रलोभ्यन्ताममात्याश्चैव सर्वशः

AI Translation: Or else, King Drupada, with his great wealth, may be tempted, along with his sons and all his ministers.

परित्यजध्वं राजानं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् अथ तत्रैव वा तेषां निवासं रोचयन्तु ते

AI Translation: Abandon the king, Kunti's son, Yudhishthira. Or let them be pleased to reside there itself.

इहैषां दोषवद्वासं वर्णयन्तु पृथक्पृथक् ते भिद्यमानास्तत्रैव मनः कुर्वन्तु पाण्डवाः

AI Translation: Let them describe separately the residence here as full of faults. Let the Pandavas, being divided, direct their minds there only.

अथ वा कुशलाः केचिदुपायनिपुणा नराः इतरेतरतः पार्थान्भेदयन्त्वनुरागतः

M. N. Dutt: O let some clever men, full of resources, sow the seed of disunion among the sons of Pritha and make them jealous of one another.

व्युत्थापयन्तु वा कृष्णां बहुत्वात्सुकरं हि तत् अथ वा पाण्डवांस्तस्यां भेदयन्तु ततश्च ताम्

M. N. Dutt: Or let them incite Krishna (Draupadi) against her husbands; as she has many husbands, it will not at all be difficult. Let some make the Pandavas dissatisfied with her, so that she may be displeased with them.

भीमसेनस्य वा राजन्नुपायकुशलैर्नरैः मृत्युर्विधीयतां छन्नैः स हि तेषां बलाधिकः

M. N. Dutt: O king, let some clever spies, full of resources, go there and secretly bring about the death of Bhimasena, he is the strongest of them all.

तस्मिंस्तु निहते राजन्हतोत्साहा हतौजसः यतिष्यन्ते न राज्याय स हि तेषां व्यपाश्रयः

M. N. Dutt: O king, on his death all the others (the Pandavas) will be deprived of strength and energy. Deprived of him, who is their mainstay, they will not attempt to regain their kingdom.

अजेयो ह्यर्जुनः संख्ये पृष्ठगोपे वृकोदरे तमृते फल्गुनो युद्धे राधेयस्य न पादभाक्

M. N. Dutt: If Arjuna is supported from behind by Vrikodara (Bhima), he is invincible in battle. But if Bhima is not there, he (Arjuna) is not a match for even the forth part of the son of Radha (Karna).

ते जानमाना दौर्बल्यं भीमसेनमृते महत् अस्मान्बलवतो ज्ञात्वा नशिष्यन्त्यबलीयसः

M. N. Dutt: In consequence of the death of Bhimasena, they (the Pandavas) would know themselves weak and ourselves strong; and they will not attempt to recover the kingdom.

इहागतेषु पार्थेषु निदेशवशवर्तिषु प्रवर्तिष्यामहे राजन्यथाश्रद्धं निबर्हणे

M. N. Dutt: O king, if coming here, they prove themselves docile and obedient to us, we would then try to repress them according to the Shastras (Political science).

M. N. Dutt: We may tempt them with handsome girls; and on sceing which Krishna (Draupadi) will surely be annoyed with the sons of Kunti.

प्रेष्यतां वापि राधेयस्तेषामागमनाय वै ते लोप्त्रहारैः संधाय वध्यन्तामाप्तकारिभिः

M. N. Dutt: Or, O son of Radha, send messengers to bring them here, so that getting them here, we might kill them by some means or other.

एतेषामभ्युपायानां यस्ते निर्दोषवान्मतः तस्य प्रयोगमातिष्ठ पुरा कालोऽतिवर्तते

AI Translation: Of these means, which one do you consider to be free from fault? Practice that one, lest time pass you by.

यावच्चाकृतविश्वासा द्रुपदे पार्थिवर्षभे तावदेवाद्य ते शक्या न शक्यास्तु ततः परम्

AI Translation: As long as you do not have faith in Drupada, the bull among kings, you can do so now, but not after that.

एषा मम मतिस्तात निग्रहाय प्रवर्तते साधु वा यदि वासाधु किं वा राधेय मन्यसे

M. N. Dutt: O father, these are my views for their suppression. Judge whether they are good or bad. What, O son of Radha (Karna), do you think?
