वैशंपायन उवाच तथा शैलनिपातेन भीषिताः खाण्डवालयाः दानवा राक्षसा नागास्तरक्ष्वृक्षवनौकसः द्विपाः प्रभिन्नाः शार्दूलाः सिंहाः केसरिणस्तथा
M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : The dwellers of the Khandava the Danavas, the Rakshasas, the Nagas the wolves and the bears, the other wild animals, the elephants with their temples rent, the tigers, the lions with manes, hundred of deer and buffaloes, birds and various other creatures, all being frightened by the falling stones and afflicted with anxiety, began to fly in all directions.
मृगाश्च महिषाश्चैव शतशः पक्षिणस्तथा समुद्विग्ना विससृपुस्तथान्या भूतजातयः
AI Translation: Deer, buffaloes, and hundreds of birds, and other kinds of beings were terrified and fled.
तं दावं समुदीक्षन्तः कृष्णौ चाभ्युद्यतायुधौ उत्पातनादशब्देन संत्रासित इवाभवन्

AI Translation: The disc, thrown again and again by the enemy-slayer Krishna, Having killed many beings, returns to his hand again and again.
तथा तु निघ्नतस्तस्य सर्वसत्त्वानि भारत बभूव रूपमत्युग्रं सर्वभूतात्मनस्तदा
AI Translation: And as he killed all beings, O descendant of Bharata, The form of the Self of all beings became extremely fierce.
समेतानां च देवानां दानवानां च सर्वशः विजेता नाभवत्कश्चित्कृष्णपाण्डवयोर्मृधे
AI Translation: And the gods and demons, all of them, were united. In the battle, no one could conquer the Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍavas.
तयोर्बलात्परित्रातुं तं दावं तु यदा सुराः नाशक्नुवञ्शमयितुं तदाभूवन्पराङ्मुखाः
AI Translation: When the gods were unable to protect him from the fire by force, they turned away, unable to extinguish it.
शतक्रतुश्च संप्रेक्ष्य विमुखान्देवतागणान् बभूवावस्थितः प्रीतः प्रशंसन्कृष्णपाण्डवौ
AI Translation: And Shatakratu, seeing the army of the gods routed, remained pleased, praising the Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍava.
निवृत्तेषु तु देवेषु वागुवाचाशरीरिणी शतक्रतुमभिप्रेक्ष्य महागम्भीरनिःस्वना
AI Translation: When the gods had withdrawn, a disembodied voice spoke, looking at Śatakratu, with a very deep sound,
न ते सखा संनिहितस्तक्षकः पन्नगोत्तमः दाहकाले खाण्डवस्य कुरुक्षेत्रं गतो ह्यसौ
AI Translation: You are not the friend of the excellent serpent Takṣaka, who is present here. He has gone to Kurukshetra at the time of the burning of Khandava.
न च शक्यौ त्वया जेतुं युद्धेऽस्मिन्समवस्थितौ वासुदेवार्जुनौ शक्र निबोधेदं वचो मम
AI Translation: You cannot defeat them in this battle. Vasudeva and Arjuna are standing together. O Indra, listen to these words of mine.
नरनारायणौ देवौ तावेतौ विश्रुतौ दिवि भवानप्यभिजानाति यद्वीर्यौ यत्पराक्रमौ
AI Translation: Those two, Nara and Narayana, are the two gods who are renowned in heaven. You also know their prowess and their valor.
नैतौ शक्यौ दुराधर्षौ विजेतुमजितौ युधि अपि सर्वेषु लोकेषु पुराणावृषिसत्तमौ
AI Translation: These two are not to be conquered, are difficult to be overcome, are unconquered in battle, even in all the worlds, are the best of sages.
पूजनीयतमावेतावपि सर्वैः सुरासुरैः सयक्षरक्षोगन्धर्वनरकिंनरपन्नगैः
M. N. Dutt: They deserve worship from all the celestial, the Asuras, the Yakshas, the Rakshasas, the Gandharvas, the human beings, the Asuras and the Nagas.
तस्मादितः सुरैः सार्धं गन्तुमर्हसि वासव दिष्टं चाप्यनुपश्यैतत्खाण्डवस्य विनाशनम्
M. N. Dutt: O Vasava, therefore, you should go away from this place with all the celestial. The destruction of the Khandava (forest) has been ordained by fate."
इति वाचमभिश्रुत्य तथ्यमित्यमरेश्वरः कोपामर्षौ समुत्सृज्य संप्रतस्थे दिवं तदा
M. N. Dutt: Having ascertained these words to be true, the lord of the immortals Indra gave up his wrath and jealousy and went back to heaven.
तं प्रस्थितं महात्मानं समवेक्ष्य दिवौकसः त्वरिताः सहिता राजन्ननुजग्मुः शतक्रतुम्
M. N. Dutt: O king, seeing that illustrious celestial gone away, the dwellers of heaven all followed Indra with their soldiers.
देवराजं तदा यान्तं सह देवैरुदीक्ष्य तु वासुदेवार्जुनौ वीरौ सिंहनादं विनेदतुः
M. N. Dutt: When those two heroes, Vasudeva and Arjuna, saw the chief of the celestial retreat with all the dwellers of heaven, they set up a leonine roar.
देवराजे गते राजन्प्रहृष्टौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ निर्विशङ्कं पुनर्दावं दाहयामासतुस्तदा
M. N. Dutt: O king, when Indra had gone away Keshava and Arjuna became exceedingly glad. Those two heroes then fearlessly assisted Agni to consume that forest.
स मारुत इवाभ्राणि नाशयित्वार्जुनः सुरान् व्यधमच्छरसंपातैः प्राणिनः खाण्डवालयान्
M. N. Dutt: Having scattered the celestial as the wind scatters the cloud, Arjuna killed with the showers of arrows numberless creatures who dwelt in the Khandava.
न च स्म किंचिच्छक्नोति भूतं निश्चरितुं ततः संछिद्यमानमिषुभिरस्यता सव्यसाचिना
M. N. Dutt: Cut off by Savyasachi's (Arjuna's) arrows, not one among those innumerable creatures could escape (from that burning forest).
नाशकंस्तत्र भूतानि महान्त्यपि रणेऽर्जुनम् निरीक्षितुममोघेषुं करिष्यन्ति कुतो रणम्
AI Translation: The great beings could not defeat Arjuna in battle. How could they fight with the one whose arrows never miss their mark?
शतेनैकं च विव्याध शतं चैकेन पत्रिणा व्यसवस्तेऽपतन्नग्नौ साक्षात्कालहता इव
AI Translation: He pierced one with a hundred arrows and one with a hundred arrows. They fell into the fire, as if struck by death itself.
न चालभन्त ते शर्म रोधःसु विषमेषु च पितृदेवनिवासेषु संतापश्चाप्यजायत
AI Translation: And they did not find peace in the forests and difficult places, And there was also torment in the abodes of the ancestors and gods.
भूतसंघसहस्राश्च दीनाश्चक्रुर्महास्वनम् रुरुवुर्वारणाश्चैव तथैव मृगपक्षिणः तेन शब्देन वित्रेसुर्गङ्गोदधिचरा झषाः

M. N. Dutt: (Krishna) killed with his discus all the Rakshasas, the Nagas and the Danavas who rushed out in crowds.
ते विभिन्नशिरोदेहाश्चक्रवेगाद्गतासवः पेतुरास्ये महाकाया दीप्तस्य वसुरेतसः
M. N. Dutt: Those creatures of huge bodies, their heads and trunks cut off by the swift discus, deprived of their lives, fell down into the burning fire.
स मांसरुधिरौघैश्च मेदौघैश्च समीरितः उपर्याकाशगो वह्निर्विधूमः समदृश्यत
AI Translation: And he was fanned by a mass of flesh and blood and a mass of fat, and the fire, moving in the sky above, was seen without smoke.
दीप्ताक्षो दीप्तजिह्वश्च दीप्तव्यात्तमहाननः दीप्तोर्ध्वकेशः पिङ्गाक्षः पिबन्प्राणभृतां वसाम्
AI Translation: With blazing eyes, blazing tongue, with a great mouth wide open, with blazing upward hair, with red eyes, drinking the fat of living beings,
तां स कृष्णार्जुनकृतां सुधां प्राप्य हुताशनः बभूव मुदितस्तृप्तः परां निर्वृतिमागतः
M. N. Dutt: Agni with fiery hair on his head, drank with the assistance of Krishna and Arjuna that nectar-like stream of fat. He was filled with great joy and thus being much gratified, he enjoyed much happiness.

M. N. Dutt: Then the slayer of Madhu saw an Asura, named maya suddenly escaping from the abode of Takshaka.
तमग्निः प्रार्थयामास दिधक्षुर्वातसारथिः देहवान्वै जटी भूत्वा नदंश्च जलदो यथा जिघांसुर्वासुदेवश्च चक्रमुद्यम्य विष्ठितः
