वैशंपायन उवाच हतेषु सर्वसैन्येषु सौप्तिके तै रथैस्त्रिभिः शोचन्युधिष्ठिरो राजा दाशार्हमिदमब्रवीत्

M. N. Dutt: How also could Drona's son kill the children of Drupada, all of whom were masters of weapons, powerful and capable of fighting with hundreds of thousands of enemies?
यस्य द्रोणो महेष्वासो न प्रादादाहवे मुखम् तं जघ्ने रथिनां श्रेष्ठं धृष्टद्युम्नं कथं नु सः
M. N. Dutt: How could he kill that best of car-warriors, viz., Dhrishtadyumna, before whom the great bowman Drona himself could not appear?
किं नु तेन कृतं कर्म तथायुक्तं नरर्षभ यदेकः शिबिरं सर्वमवधीन्नो गुरोः सुतः
M. N. Dutt: What act was done by the preceptor' son, O foremost of men, for which he succeeded in killing, single-headed, all our men in battle?'
वासुदेव उवाच नूनं स देवदेवानामीश्वरेश्वरमव्ययम् जगाम शरणं द्रौणिरेकस्तेनावधीद्बहून्
M. N. Dutt: Krishna said Drona's son had sought the help of that highest of all the gods, the eternal Mahadeva! For this he could kill single-handed, so large a number of warriors,
प्रसन्नो हि महादेवो दद्यादमरतामपि वीर्यं च गिरिशो दद्याद्येनेन्द्रमपि शातयेत्
M. N. Dutt: If Mahadeva is pleased he can grant even immortality! Girisha can give such courage as will succeed in checking Indra himself.
वेदाहं हि महादेवं तत्त्वेन भरतर्षभ यानि चास्य पुराणानि कर्माणि विविधान्युत
M. N. Dutt: I know Mahadeva truly, foremost of Bharata's race! I know also his various former deeds.
आदिरेष हि भूतानां मध्यमन्तश्च भारत विचेष्टते जगच्चेदं सर्वमस्यैव कर्मणा
M. N. Dutt: He, is the beginning, the middle, and the end of all creatures! This universe acts and moves through his power.
एवं सिसृक्षुर्भूतानि ददर्श प्रथमं विभुः पितामहोऽब्रवीच्चैनं भूतानि सृज माचिरम्
AI Translation: Thus, the Creator, desiring to create beings, first saw The Grandfather said to him, "Create beings, not too long."
हरिकेशस्तथेत्युक्त्वा भूतानां दोषदर्शिवान् दीर्घकालं तपस्तेपे मग्नोऽम्भसि महातपाः
AI Translation: Harikesha, seeing the faults of the beings, said, "So be it." The great ascetic, immersed in the water, practiced austerities for a long time.
सुमहान्तं ततः कालं प्रतीक्ष्यैनं पितामहः स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानां ससर्ज मनसापरम्
M. N. Dutt: Having waited for Rudra for a very long time, the Grandfather by his willpower called into being another living being for the purpose of propagating his species.
सोऽब्रवीत्पितरं दृष्ट्वा गिरिशं मग्नमम्भसि यदि मे नाग्रजस्त्वन्यस्ततः स्रक्ष्याम्यहं प्रजाः
M. N. Dutt: Seeing Girisha plunged into the water, this (second) being, said to his father,-If there be no other being born before me, then I shall multiply my self.
तमब्रवीत्पिता नास्ति त्वदन्यः पुरुषोऽग्रजः स्थाणुरेष जले मग्नो विस्रब्धः कुरु वै कृतिम्
M. N. Dutt: His father replied, saying,—There is no other born before you! Shiva has pledged himself into the water! Go and create living creatures, without any fear.
स भूतान्यसृजत्सप्त दक्षादींस्तु प्रजापतीन् यैरिमं व्यकरोत्सर्वं भूतग्रामं चतुर्विधम्
M. N. Dutt: He then created many living creatures, having Daksha for their first, who created all those four-fold creatures.
ताः सृष्टमात्राः क्षुधिताः प्रजाः सर्वाः प्रजापतिम् बिभक्षयिषवो राजन्सहसा प्राद्रवंस्तदा
M. N. Dutt: As soon, as they were born, they ran, O king, towards their father,. stricken with hunger and desirous of eating him up.
स भक्ष्यमाणस्त्राणार्थी पितामहमुपाद्रवत् आभ्यो मां भगवान्पातु वृत्तिरासां विधीयताम्
M. N. Dutt: The second being whom Brahman had created, thereupon ran towards him, seeking protection from his own offspring. And he said to the Grandfather,-Oillustrious one, save me from these, and let these creatures have their food.
ततस्ताभ्यो ददावन्नमोषधीः स्थावराणि च जङ्गमानि च भूतानि दुर्बलानि बलीयसाम्
M. N. Dutt: Then the Grandfather gave herbs and plants and other vegetables as their food, and assigned for the strong the weaker creatures as their food.
विहितान्नाः प्रजास्तास्तु जग्मुस्तुष्टा यथागतम् ततो ववृधिरे राजन्प्रीतिमत्यः स्वयोनिषु
M. N. Dutt: Their means of sustenance having been thus settled the newly created creatures all went away where they liked, and cheerfully multiplied their respective species.
भूतग्रामे विवृद्धे तु तुष्टे लोकगुरावपि उदतिष्ठज्जलाज्ज्येष्ठः प्रजाश्चेमा ददर्श सः
M. N. Dutt: After the creatures had multiplied and Brahma had become well gratified, the firstborn rose from water and saw the living creation.
बहुरूपाः प्रजा दृष्ट्वा विवृद्धाः स्वेन तेजसा चुक्रोध भगवान्रुद्रो लिङ्गं स्वं चाप्यविध्यत
AI Translation: Seeing the many-formed creatures increased by their own energy, the Blessed One Rudra became angry and pierced his own linga.
तत्प्रविद्धं तदा भूमौ तथैव प्रत्यतिष्ठत तमुवाचाव्ययो ब्रह्मा वचोभिः शमयन्निव
AI Translation: It was thrown down on the ground and stood there as it was. Brahma, the Imperishable One, spoke to him in words that were pacifying.
किं कृतं सलिले शर्व चिरकालं स्थितेन ते किमर्थं चैतदुत्पाट्य भूमौ लिङ्गं प्रवेरितम्
AI Translation: What have you done by staying in the water for a long time, O Śiva? And why have you uprooted this linga and thrown it on the ground?
सोऽब्रवीज्जातसंरम्भस्तदा लोकगुरुर्गुरुम् प्रजाः सृष्टाः परेणेमाः किं करिष्याम्यनेन वै
M. N. Dutt: Thus accosted, that lord of the universe angrily answered the lord Brahman,Somebody else has created all these creatures. What purpose then would be fulfilled by this organ of mine.
तपसाधिगतं चान्नं प्रजार्थं मे पितामह ओषध्यः परिवर्तेरन्यथैव सततं प्रजाः
M. N. Dutt: I have, by my active penances, O Grandfather, created all these creatures. These herbs and plants also will multiply like those that will live upon them.
एवमुक्त्वा तु संक्रुद्धो जगाम विमना भवः गिरेर्मुञ्जवतः पादं तपस्तप्तुं महातपाः
M. N. Dutt: Saying so, Bhava went away, dispirited and angry, to the foot of the Munjavat mountains for practising austere penances.”
