युधिष्ठिर उवाच कथंवीर्यः समभवत्स राजा वदतां वरः कथं च जातरूपेण समयुज्यत स द्विज
M. N. Dutt: Yudhishthira said O best of speakers, how that king waxed so powerful? And how, O twice-born one, did he get so much gold?
क्व च तत्सांप्रतं द्रव्यं भगवन्नवतिष्ठते कथं च शक्यमस्माभिस्तदवाप्तुं तपोधन
M. N. Dutt: And where now, O reverend sire, is all his wealth? And, O ascetic, how can we secure the same?
व्यास उवाच असुराश्चैव देवाश्च दक्षस्यासन्प्रजापतेः अपत्यं बहुलं तात तेऽस्पर्धन्त परस्परम्
AI Translation: Vyasa said: The Asuras and the Devas were the offspring of Daksha Prajapati. O son, they were many and they competed with each other.
तथैवाङ्गिरसः पुत्रौ व्रततुल्यौ बभूवतुः बृहस्पतिर्बृहत्तेजाः संवर्तश्च तपोधनः
AI Translation: Similarly, the two sons of Angiras were equal in their vows: Brihaspati, of great splendor, and Samvarta, the one rich in austerities.
तावपि स्पर्धिनौ राजन्पृथगास्तां परस्परम् बृहस्पतिश्च संवर्तं बाधते स्म पुनः पुनः
AI Translation: O king, they too were rivals, each against the other. Brihaspati repeatedly thwarted Samvarta.
स बाध्यमानः सततं भ्रात्रा ज्येष्ठेन भारत अर्थानुत्सृज्य दिग्वासा वनवासमरोचयत्
M. N. Dutt: And always troubled by his elder brother, he, O Bharata, renouncing his riches, went to the forest, with nothing to cover his body except the open sky.
वासवोऽप्यसुरान्सर्वान्निर्जित्य च निहत्य च इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्य लोकेषु ततो वव्रे पुरोहितम् पुत्रमङ्गिरसो ज्येष्ठं विप्रश्रेष्ठं बृहस्पतिम्
AI Translation: Having conquered and killed all the demons, Vāsava (Indra) attained the status of Indra in the worlds, and then chose as his priest the eldest son of Aṅgiras, the best of Brahmins, Brihaspati.
याज्यस्त्वङ्गिरसः पूर्वमासीद्राजा करंधमः वीर्येणाप्रतिमो लोके वृत्तेन च बलेन च शतक्रतुरिवौजस्वी धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः
AI Translation: In the past, the king Karandhama was the disciple of Angiras. He was incomparable in the world in his valor, conduct, and strength. He was as powerful as Indra, with a virtuous soul and firm vows.

तस्य वासवतुल्योऽभून्मरुत्तो नाम वीर्यवान् पुत्रस्तमनुरक्ताभूत्पृथिवी सागराम्बरा
M. N. Dutt: He had a son named Marutta, gifted with energy, and resembling Vasava himself. This earth clad in oceans felt herself attracted towards him.
स्पर्धते सततं स स्म देवराजेन पार्थिवः वासवोऽपि मरुत्तेन स्पर्धते पाण्डुनन्दन
M. N. Dutt: He always used to defy the king of the celestials; and, O son of Pandu, Vasava also defied Marutta.
शुचिः स गुणवानासीन्मरुत्तः पृथिवीपतिः यतमानोऽपि यं शक्रो न विशेषयति स्म ह
M. N. Dutt: And Marutta-master of Earth-was pure and perfect. And despite his striving, Shakra could not prevail over him.
सोऽशक्नुवन्विशेषाय समाहूय बृहस्पतिम् उवाचेदं वचो देवैः सहितो हरिवाहनः
M. N. Dutt: And unable to control him, he riding on the horse, along with the celestials summoning Brihaspati, spoke to him thus.
बृहस्पते मरुत्तस्य मा स्म कार्षीः कथंचन दैवं कर्माथ वा पित्र्यं कर्तासि मम चेत्प्रियम्
AI Translation: O Brihaspati, do not do anything to Marutta. If you wish to do what is pleasing to me, then perform either the divine or the ancestral rites.
अहं हि त्रिषु लोकेषु सुराणां च बृहस्पते इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्तवानेको मरुत्तस्तु महीपतिः
AI Translation: I am the only one who has attained Indrahood among the gods in the three worlds, O Brihaspati, while Marutta is the lord of the earth.
कथं ह्यमर्त्यं ब्रह्मंस्त्वं याजयित्वा सुराधिपम् याजयेर्मृत्युसंयुक्तं मरुत्तमविशङ्कया
M. N. Dutt: How, O Brahmana, having acted as priest to the immortal king of the celestials, will you unhesitatingly act as a priest to Marutta subject to death?
मां वा वृणीष्व भद्रं ते मरुत्तं वा महीपतिम् परित्यज्य मरुत्तं वा यथाजोषं भजस्व माम्
M. N. Dutt: May you fare well. Either take up my side or that of the king, Marutta, or forsaking Marutta, gladly come over to me.
एवमुक्तः स कौरव्य देवराज्ञा बृहस्पतिः मुहूर्तमिव संचिन्त्य देवराजानमब्रवीत्
M. N. Dutt: Thus addressed by the king of the Brihaspati, thinking for a mc.nent, replied to the king of the celestials.
त्वं भूतानामधिपतिस्त्वयि लोकाः प्रतिष्ठिताः नमुचेर्विश्वरूपस्य निहन्ता त्वं बलस्य च
M. N. Dutt: You are the Lord of creatures, and in you are the worlds established. And you have killed Namuchi Vishvarupa and Vala.
त्वमाजहर्थ देवानामेको वीर श्रियं पराम् त्वं बिभर्षि भुवं द्यां च सदैव बलसूदन
M. N. Dutt: You, O hero, alone, bring about the highest prosperity of the celestials, and O slayer of Bala, you sustain the carth as well as the celestial region.
पौरोहित्यं कथं कृत्वा तव देवगणेश्वर याजयेयमहं मर्त्यं मरुत्तं पाकशासन
AI Translation: How can I perform the duties of a priest for you, O Lord of the gods? O Lord of the Maruts, I wish to perform the sacrifice for Marutta.
समाश्वसिहि देवेश नाहं मर्त्याय कर्हिचित् ग्रहीष्यामि स्रुवं यज्ञे शृणु चेदं वचो मम
AI Translation: Be at ease, O Lord of the gods! I shall never take the ladle in a sacrifice for a mortal. And hear these words of mine.
हिरण्यरेतसोऽम्भः स्यात्परिवर्तेत मेदिनी भासं च न रविः कुर्यान्मत्सत्यं विचलेद्यदि
M. N. Dutt: Even if the god of fire cease to cause heat and warmth, or the earth change its nature, or the sun cease to give light, I shall never deviate from the truth.
बृहस्पतिवचः श्रुत्वा शक्रो विगतमत्सरः प्रशस्यैनं विवेशाथ स्वमेव भवनं तदा
M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said On hearing these words of Brihaspati, Indra became freed from his envious feelings, and then lauding him he repaired to his own palace.
