उत्तङ्क उवाच अभिजानामि जगतः कर्तारं त्वां जनार्दन नूनं भवत्प्रसादोऽयमिति मे नास्ति संशयः
M. N. Dutt: Utanka said I know you, O Janardana, to be the creator of the universe. Forsooth, this knowledge that I have is the result of your grace towards me.
चित्तं च सुप्रसन्नं मे त्वद्भावगतमच्युत विनिवृत्तश्च मे कोप इति विद्धि परंतप
M. N. Dutt: O you of unfading glory, my heart is possessed of cheerful tranquility on account of its being devoted to you. Know, O chastiser of enemies, that my heart is no longer inclined to curse you.
यदि त्वनुग्रहं कंचित्त्वत्तोऽर्होऽहं जनार्दन द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं तन्निदर्शय
M. N. Dutt: If, O Janardana, I deserve the least grace from you, do you then show me once your supreme form.
वैशंपायन उवाच ततः स तस्मै प्रीतात्मा दर्शयामास तद्वपुः शाश्वतं वैष्णवं धीमान्ददृशे यद्धनंजयः
M. N. Dutt: Pleased with him, the holy one then showed Uttanka that eternal Vaishnava form which Dhananjaya of great intelligence had seen.
स ददर्श महात्मानं विश्वरूपं महाभुजम् विस्मयं च ययौ विप्रस्तद्दृष्ट्वा रूपमैश्वरम्
AI Translation: He saw the great-souled one, of great arms, of universal form. And the brahmin was amazed, having seen that divine form.

M. N. Dutt: Do you withdraw this excellent and indestructible forin of yours. I wish to see you now in your own (human) form which too, is eternal.
वैशंपायन उवाच तमुवाच प्रसन्नात्मा गोविन्दो जनमेजय वरं वृणीष्वेति तदा तमुत्तङ्कोऽब्रवीदिदम्

M. N. Dutt: Krishna, however, once more said to him, 'Do not scruple in this matter! This must be done! A sight of my form cannot be fruitless!
उत्तङ्क उवाच अवश्यकरणीयं वै यद्येतन्मन्यसे विभो तोयमिच्छामि यत्रेष्टं मरुष्वेतद्धि दुर्लभम्
M. N. Dutt: I must accomplish that, O lord, which you think should be done! I wish to have water wherever my wish for it may arise. Water is scarce in such deserts!
वैशंपायन उवाच ततः संहृत्य तत्तेजः प्रोवाचोत्तङ्कमीश्वरः एष्टव्ये सति चिन्त्योऽहमित्युक्त्वा द्वारकां ययौ
M. N. Dutt: Withdrawing that energy, the Supreme Lord then said to Utanka, Whenever you will require water, think of me!' Having said so, he proceeded towards of Dwraka.
ततः कदाचिद्भगवानुत्तङ्कस्तोयकाङ्क्षया तृषितः परिचक्राम मरौ सस्मार चाच्युतम्
M. N. Dutt: Subsequently, one day, the illustrious Utanka, solicitous of water and greatly thirsty, wandered over the desert. In course of his wanderings he thought of Krishna of unfading glory.
ततो दिग्वाससं धीमान्मातङ्गं मलपङ्किनम् अपश्यत मरौ तस्मिञ्श्वयूथपरिवारितम्
M. N. Dutt: The intelligent Rishi then saw in that desert a naked hunter (of the Chandala class), all besmeared with dirt, surrounded by a pack of dogs.
भीषणं बद्धनिस्त्रिंशं बाणकार्मुकधारिणम् तस्याधः स्रोतसोऽपश्यद्वारि भूरि द्विजोत्तमः
M. N. Dutt: Extremely fierce-loO king, he carried a sword and was armed with bow and arrows. That foremost of twice-born ones saw copious streams of water issuing from the urinary organs of that hunter.
स्मरन्नेव च तं प्राह मातङ्गः प्रहसन्निव एह्युत्तङ्क प्रतीच्छस्व मत्तो वारि भृगूद्वह कृपा हि मे सुमहती त्वां दृष्ट्वा तृट्समाहतम्
M. N. Dutt: As soon as Utanka had thought of Krishna, that hunter smilingly addressed him, saying, O Utanka, oyou or Bhrigu's race, do yoil accept this water from me.
इत्युक्तस्तेन स मुनिस्तत्तोयं नाभ्यनन्दत चिक्षेप च स तं धीमान्वाग्भिरुग्राभिरच्युतम्
AI Translation: Thus addressed by him, the sage did not accept that water. And the wise one threw it at him with harsh words, O Achyuta.
पुनः पुनश्च मातङ्गः पिबस्वेति तमब्रवीत् न चापिबत्स सक्रोधः क्षुभितेनान्तरात्मना
AI Translation: Again and again the elephant said to him, “Drink again and again.” But he did not drink, angry and agitated in his mind.
स तथा निश्चयात्तेन प्रत्याख्यातो महात्मना श्वभिः सह महाराज तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
AI Translation: Thus, rejected by the noble one due to his determination, O great king, he disappeared right there with the dogs.
उत्तङ्कस्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा ततो व्रीडितमानसः मेने प्रलब्धमात्मानं कृष्णेनामित्रघातिना
AI Translation: Seeing him like that, Uttanka, with a mind full of shame, thought that he had been deceived by Krishna, the slayer of enemies.
अथ तेनैव मार्गेण शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः आजगाम महाबाहुरुत्तङ्कश्चैनमब्रवीत्
AI Translation: Then, by the same path, the wielder of conch, discus, and mace, the mighty-armed one came. Uttanka said to him,
न युक्तं तादृशं दातुं त्वया पुरुषसत्तम सलिलं विप्रमुख्येभ्यो मातङ्गस्रोतसा विभो
AI Translation: It is not proper for you, O best of men, to give such water to the chief of Brahmins through the stream of the elephant. O Lord,
इत्युक्तवचनं धीमान्महाबुद्धिर्जनार्दनः उत्तङ्कं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा सान्त्वयन्निदमब्रवीत्
AI Translation: Thus addressed by the wise one, the intelligent Janardana, with gentle words, consoled Uttanka and said this:
यादृशेनेह रूपेण योग्यं दातुं वृतेन वै तादृशं खलु मे दत्तं त्वं तु तन्नावबुध्यसे
AI Translation: Whatever form is suitable to give to the one who has chosen, That very form has been given to me, but you do not understand it.
मया त्वदर्थमुक्तो हि वज्रपाणिः पुरंदरः उत्तङ्कायामृतं देहि तोयरूपमिति प्रभुः
AI Translation: "I have told you, for your sake, about Vajrapani, the lord of the city, " "The lord has said, ""Give nectar to Uttanka in the form of water.""""
स मामुवाच देवेन्द्रो न मर्त्योऽमर्त्यतां व्रजेत् अन्यमस्मै वरं देहीत्यसकृद्भृगुनन्दन
AI Translation: Indra said to me, "No mortal can attain immortality. "Give him another boon," he said to me again and again, O son of Bhrigu.
अमृतं देयमित्येव मयोक्तः स शचीपतिः स मां प्रसाद्य देवेन्द्रः पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत्
AI Translation: I said to the lord of Shachi, "Give the nectar." The lord of the gods, having pleased me, again said this to me:
यदि देयमवश्यं वै मातङ्गोऽहं महाद्युते भूत्वामृतं प्रदास्यामि भार्गवाय महात्मने
AI Translation: If it must be given, O you of great splendor, I am a buffalo. Having become nectar, I shall give it to the great-souled Bhārgava.
यद्येवं प्रतिगृह्णाति भार्गवोऽमृतमद्य वै प्रदातुमेष गच्छामि भार्गवायामृतं प्रभो प्रत्याख्यातस्त्वहं तेन न दद्यामिति भार्गव
AI Translation: If he accepts it, O Bhārgava, then I shall give you the nectar today. O Lord, I shall go to give the nectar to Bhārgava. I was rejected by him, saying, "I shall not give it."
स तथा समयं कृत्वा तेन रूपेण वासवः उपस्थितस्त्वया चापि प्रत्याख्यातोऽमृतं ददत् चण्डालरूपी भगवान्सुमहांस्ते व्यतिक्रमः
AI Translation: Having made that promise, Vāsava in that form came to you, but you rejected him, even though he was offering nectar. The Blessed One in the form of an outcaste, so great is your transgression.

AI Translation: On those days, O Brahman, when you will desire water, then in the desert there will be water-filled clouds.

AI Translation: They will give you water like nectar, O descendant of Bhrigu. They will be known as Uttanka clouds, and they will also gain fame.

M. N. Dutt: Thus addressed by Krishna, Utanka became Glad, and to this day, O Bharata, Utankaclouds (appear and) shower rain on arid deserts.
