युधिष्ठिर उवाच किमर्थं सहसा विन्ध्यः प्रवृद्धः क्रोधमूर्छितः एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण महामुने
M. N. Dutt: Yudhishthira said : O great Rishi, I am desirous of hearing why Vindhya (mountain), made senseless with anger, suddenly began to increase its bulk.
लोमश उवाच अद्रिराजं महाशैलं मरुं कनकपर्वतम् उदयास्तमये भानुः प्रदक्षिणमवर्तत
M. N. Dutt: Lomasha said : The sun between his rising and setting went round that king of mountains, that great golden mountain named Meru.
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तथा विन्ध्यः शैलः सूर्यमथाब्रवीत् यथा हि मेरुर्भवता नित्यशः परिगम्यते प्रदक्षिणं च क्रियते मामेवं कुरु भास्कर
AI Translation: Seeing that, Vindhya Mountain said to the sun: "Just as Meru is always circumambulated by you, please do the same for me, O Sun."
एवमुक्तस्ततः सूर्यः शैलेन्द्रं प्रत्यभाषत नाहमात्मेच्छया शैल करोम्येनं प्रदक्षिणम् एष मार्गः प्रदिष्टो मे येनेदं निर्मितं जगत्
AI Translation: Thus addressed, the Sun spoke to the lord of mountains: "I do not circumambulate you out of my own will, O mountain." "This is the path that has been indicated to me by which this world is created."
एवमुक्तस्ततः क्रोधात्प्रवृद्धः सहसाचलः सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्मार्गं रोद्धुमिच्छन्परंतप
M. N. Dutt: Having been thus addressed, the mountain, O chastiser of foes, desiring to obstruct the path of the sun and the moon, suddenly began to increase its bulk in anger.
ततो देवाः सहिताः सर्व एव; सेन्द्राः समागम्य महाद्रिराजम् निवारयामासुरुपायतस्तं; न च स्म तेषां वचनं चकार
M. N. Dutt: Thereupon all the assembled celestials came to Vindhya, the great king of mountains and tried to dissuade him from what he was doing. But he did not heed their words.
अथाभिजग्मुर्मुनिमाश्रमस्थं; तपस्विनं धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठम् अगस्त्यमत्यद्भुतवीर्यदीप्तं; तं चार्थमूचुः सहिताः सुरास्ते
M. N. Dutt: Then the assembled celestials all went to the Rishi living in his hermitage, that ascetic, that foremost of virtuous men, the wonderfully powerful Agastya; and they told him all.
देवा ऊचुः सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्मार्गं नक्षत्राणां गतिं तथा शैलराजो वृणोत्येष विन्ध्यः क्रोधवशानुगः
AI Translation: The gods said: The path of the sun and moon, and the movement of the stars, The king of mountains, Vindhya, is following the influence of anger.
तं निवारयितुं शक्तो नान्यः कश्चिद्द्विजोत्तम ऋते त्वां हि महाभाग तस्मादेनं निवारय
AI Translation: O best of Brahmins, there is no one else who can restrain him. O highly fortunate one, therefore, restrain him.
लोमश उवाच तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं विप्रः सुराणां शैलमभ्यगात् सोऽभिगम्याब्रवीद्विन्ध्यं सदारः समुपस्थितः
M. N. Dutt: Lomasha said : Having heard the words of the celestials, the Brahmana went to the mountain. Going there with his wife, he spoke thus to Vindhya.
मार्गमिच्छाम्यहं दत्तं भवता पर्वतोत्तम दक्षिणामभिगन्तास्मि दिशं कार्येण केनचित्
M. N. Dutt: "O foremost of mountains, I wish to have a path given to me by you, as I intend to go to the southern country for some purpose.
यावदागमनं मह्यं तावत्त्वं प्रतिपालय निवृत्ते मयि शैलेन्द्र ततो वर्धस्व कामतः
M. N. Dutt: O king of mountains, wait till I return, you can then increase your bulk as much as you like."
एवं स समयं कृत्वा विन्ध्येनामित्रकर्शन अद्यापि दक्षिणाद्देशाद्वारुणिर्न निवर्तते
M. N. Dutt: O chastiser of foes, having made this agreement with Vindhya, (he went away) and up to the present day the son of Varuna (Agastya) has not returned from the southern country.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथा विन्ध्यो न वर्धते अगस्त्यस्य प्रभावेन यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि
M. N. Dutt: Thus have I narrated to you, as you asked me to do, why Vindhya does not increase its bulk on account of the prowess of Agastya.
कालेयास्तु यथा राजन्सुरैः सर्वैर्निषूदिताः अगस्त्याद्वरमासाद्य तन्मे निगदतः शृणु
M. N. Dutt: O king, now hear how the Kalkeyas were destroyed by the celestials when they obtained their prayer from Agastya.
त्रिदशानां वचः श्रुत्वा मैत्रावरुणिरब्रवीत् किमर्थमभियाताः स्थ वरं मत्तः किमिच्छथ एवमुक्तास्ततस्तेन देवास्तं मुनिमब्रुवन्
M. N. Dutt: Having heard the words of the celestials, the son of Mitra and Varuna said, “Why have you come? What boon do you solicit from me?” Having been thus addressed, the celestials said to the Rishi.

M. N. Dutt: Having heard the words of the celestials, the Rishi said, "So be it. I shall do what you desire and also that which would be beneficial to the world."
एवमुक्त्वा ततोऽगच्छत्समुद्रं सरितां पतिम् ऋषिभिश्च तपःसिद्धैः सार्धं देवैश्च सुव्रतः
M. N. Dutt: O vow-observing man, having said this, he then went to the lord of rivers, the ocean, accompanied by the Rishis who had become successful in asceticism and by the celestials.
मनुष्योरगगन्धर्वयक्षकिंपुरुषास्तथा अनुजग्मुर्महात्मानं द्रष्टुकामास्तदद्भुतम्
M. N. Dutt: Men, snakes, Gandharvas, Yakshas and Kinnaras followed the high-souled (Rishi), with the desire of seeing that wonderful feat.
ततोऽभ्यगच्छन्सहिताः समुद्रं भीमनिस्वनम् नृत्यन्तमिव चोर्मीभिर्वल्गन्तमिव वायुना
AI Translation: Then, together, they approached the ocean, with a terrible sound, Dancing as it were with waves, leaping as it were with the wind,
हसन्तमिव फेनौघैः स्खलन्तं कन्दरेषु च नानाग्राहसमाकीर्णं नानाद्विजगणायुतम्
