वैशंपायन उवाच ततः प्रयातः कौशिक्याः पाण्डवो जनमेजय आनुपूर्व्येण सर्वाणि जगामायतनान्युत

स सागरं समासाद्य गङ्गायाः संगमे नृप नदीशतानां पञ्चानां मध्ये चक्रे समाप्लवम्

AI Translation: Having reached the ocean, at the confluence of the Ganges, O king, in the midst of five hundred rivers, he performed the ritual of immersion.

ततः समुद्रतीरेण जगाम वसुधाधिपः भ्रातृभिः सहितो वीरः कलिङ्गान्प्रति भारत

M. N. Dutt: O descendant of Bharata, that ruler of earth, the hero, accompanied by his brothers then went along the shore of the ocean to the land of the Kalinga.

लोमश उवाच एते कलिङ्गाः कौन्तेय यत्र वैतरणी नदी यत्रायजत धर्मोऽपि देवाञ्शरणमेत्य वै

M. N. Dutt: Lomasha said: O son of Kunti, this is Kalinga where flows the river Vaitarani, where (on the banks of which) Dharma performed sacrifices under the protection of the celestials.

ऋषिभिः समुपायुक्तं यज्ञियं गिरिशोभितम् उत्तरं तीरमेतद्धि सततं द्विजसेवितम्

M. N. Dutt: This is the Northern bank of the Vaitarani) always frequented by the Brahmanas, inhabited by the Rishis, suitable tur performning sacrifices and adorned with a hill.

समेन देवयानेन पथा स्वर्गमुपेयुषः अत्र वै ऋषयोऽन्येऽपि पुरा क्रतुभिरीजिरे

M. N. Dutt: It rivals the path by which a virtuous man fit for going to heaven goes to the celestials region in the days of yore, the Rishis performed sacrifices at this spot.

अत्रैव रुद्रो राजेन्द्र पशुमादत्तवान्मखे रुद्रः पशुं मानवेन्द्र भागोऽयमिति चाब्रवीत्

M. N. Dutt: O king of kings, here at this spot Rudra seized the sacrificial beast. O king of kings, he then exclaimed, “This is my share.

हृते पशौ तदा देवास्तमूचुर्भरतर्षभ मा परस्वमभिद्रोग्धा मा धर्मान्सकलान्नशीः

M. N. Dutt: O best of the Bharata race, the (sacrificial) beasts being thus taken away, the celestials then thus spoke to him, “Do not cast covetous eyes on the property of others. Do not disregard all the righteous rules.”

ततः कल्याणरूपाभिर्वाग्भिस्ते रुद्रमस्तुवन् इष्ट्या चैनं तर्पयित्वा मानयां चक्रिरे तदा

M. N. Dutt: They then addressed pleasing words of glorification to Rudra (Shiva). They gratified him with a sacrifice and they offered him suitable honours.

अयातयामं सर्वेभ्यो भागेभ्यो भागमुत्तमम् देवाः संकल्पयामासुर्भयाद्रुद्रस्य शाश्वतम्

M. N. Dutt: The celestials from the fear of Rudra set apart for eternity the best portion of all shares (of a sacrifice) such as was fresh and not stale.

इमां गाथामत्र गायन्नपः स्पृशति यो नरः देवयानस्तस्य पन्थाश्चक्षुश्चैव प्रकाशते

M. N. Dutt: The man, who bathes at this spot and recites this ancient story, sees with his human eyes the path that leads to the celestials region.

वैशंपायन उवाच ततो वैतरणीं सर्वे पाण्डवा द्रौपदी तथा अवतीर्य महाभागा तर्पयां चक्रिरे पितॄन्

M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : Thereupon all the highly exalted Pandavas with Draupadi descended to the Vaitarani and offered oblations to the Pitris.

युधिष्ठिर उवाच उपस्पृश्यैव भगवन्नस्यां नद्यां तपोधन मानुषादस्मि विषयादपेतः पश्य लोमश

M. N. Dutt: Yudhishthira said : O Lomasha, behold, how great is the merit of a pious act! Having bathed in this spot with proper form, I seem no more to touch the world of men.

सर्वाँल्लोकान्प्रपश्यामि प्रसादात्तव सुव्रत वैखानसानां जपतामेष शब्दो महात्मनाम्

M. N. Dutt: O vow-observing Rishi, through your grace I see all the regions. This is the sound of the recitations (of the Vedas) by the high-souled Rishis.

लोमश उवाच त्रिशतं वै सहस्राणि योजनानां युधिष्ठिर यत्र ध्वनिं शृणोष्येनं तूष्णीमास्स्व विशां पते

M. N. Dutt: Lomasha said: O Yudhishthira, O ruler of men, the place from which you hear this sound, is distant from here three hundred thousand yojanas. Keep quiet.

एतत्स्वयंभुवो राजन्वनं रम्यं प्रकाशते यत्रायजत कौन्तेय विश्वकर्मा प्रतापवान्

M. N. Dutt: O king, this is the celestials forest of the self-create (Brahma) where, O king of kings, the powerful Vishvamitra-performed his sacrifices.

यस्मिन्यज्ञे हि भूर्दत्ता कश्यपाय महात्मने सपर्वतवनोद्देशा दक्षिणा वै स्वयंभुवा

M. N. Dutt: In which sacrifices the self-create (Brahma) gave away to the illustrious Kashyapa, as Dakshina, this earth with all its mountains, rivers and countries.

अवासीदच्च कौन्तेय दत्तमात्रा मही तदा उवाच चापि कुपिता लोकेश्वरमिदं प्रभुम्

AI Translation: The earth sank down as soon as it was given to him, O son of Kunti, and she said to the angry Lord of the world:

न मां मर्त्याय भगवन्कस्मैचिद्दातुमर्हसि प्रदानं मोघमेतत्ते यास्याम्येषा रसातलम्

AI Translation: O Blessed One, you should not give me to any mortal. This gift of yours will be in vain. I will go to the netherworld.

M. N. Dutt: O son of Pandu, thereupon the earth was gratified with his asceticism. She again rose from the water and remained as a sacrificial altar.

सैषा प्रकाशते राजन्वेदी संस्थानलक्षणा आरुह्यात्र महाराज वीर्यवान्वै भविष्यसि

M. N. Dutt: O king, yonder before us is the spot with the distinct form of that sacred altar. O great king, ascending it, become great in prowess.

M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : Thereupon when the ceremony to avert evils had been completed, the high-souled Yudhishthira went into the sea. Having performed all that the Rishi (Lomasha) had ordered, he went to the Mahendra (mountain) and spent the night there.
