लोमश उवाच एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु बृहद्द्युम्नो महीपतिः सत्रमास्ते महाभागो रैभ्ययाज्यः प्रतापवान्
M. N. Dutt: Lomasha said: About this time, the highly blessed ruler of earth, the greatly powerful Brihadyumna, the Yajamana of Raivya performed a sacrifice.
तेन रैभ्यस्य वै पुत्रावर्वावसुपरावसू वृतौ सहायौ सत्रार्थे बृहद्द्युम्नेन धीमता
M. N. Dutt: The two sons of Raivya, named Arvavasu and Paravasu, were employed by the intelligent Brihadyumna to assist him in the sacrifice.
तत्र तौ समनुज्ञातौ पित्रा कौन्तेय जग्मतुः आश्रमे त्वभवद्रैभ्यो भार्या चैव परावसोः
M. N. Dutt: O son of Kunti, thercupon those two, taking the permission of their father, went away. Raivya remained in the hermitage with Paravasu's wife.
अथावलोककोऽगच्छद्गृहानेकः परावसुः कृष्णाजिनेन संवीतं ददर्श पितरं वने
M. N. Dutt: One day in order to see his wife, Paravasu alone went to the hermitage and he saw his father in the forest, covered with black dcerskin.
जघन्यरात्रे निद्रान्धः सावशेषे तमस्यपि चरन्तं गहनेऽरण्ये मेने स पितरं मृगम्
M. N. Dutt: The night was far advanced and dark and he was drowsy with sleep. When roaming in the forest, he took his father for a deer.
मृगं तु मन्यमानेन पिता वै तेन हिंसितः अकामयानेन तदा शरीरत्राणमिच्छता
M. N. Dutt: Mistaking his father for a dcer, he unintentionally killed him with the desire of protecting his own body.

M. N. Dutt: Paravasu said: You will never be able to perform this act alone. I have killed our father, mistaking him for a deer.
सोऽस्मदर्थे व्रतं साधु चर त्वं ब्रह्महिंसनम् समर्थो ह्यहमेकाकी कर्म कर्तुमिदं मुने
M. N. Dutt: O brother, on my behalf, observe a vow prescribed in the case of killing a Brahmana. O Rishi, I shall alone be able to perform this act.
अर्वावसुरुवाच करोतु वै भवान्सत्रं बृहद्द्युम्नस्य धीमतः ब्रह्महत्यां चरिष्येऽहं त्वदर्थं नियतेन्द्रियः
M. N. Dutt: Arvavasu said: Then perform the sacrifice of the intelligent Brihadyumna. On your behalf, I shall observe the vow prescribed in the case of killing a Brahmana by subduing my senses.

एष ते ब्रह्महा यज्ञं मा द्रष्टुं प्रविशेदिति ब्रह्महा प्रेक्षितेनापि पीडयेत्त्वां न संशयः
M. N. Dutt: "See that this killer of a Brahmana may not enter your sacrifice. Do not also look at him, for even a glance at a killer of a Brahmana can certainly do you harm."

देवा ऊचुः मैवं कृथा यवक्रीत यथा वदसि वै मुने ऋते गुरुमधीता हि सुखं वेदास्त्वया पुरा
AI Translation: The gods said: "Do not do this, O Yavakrita, as you say, O sage, "For you have studied the Vedas before, apart from the teacher.
अनेन तु गुरून्दुःखात्तोषयित्वा स्वकर्मणा कालेन महता क्लेशाद्ब्रह्माधिगतमुत्तमम्
AI Translation: But by pleasing the teachers with his own actions, after a long time and great hardship, he attained the supreme state of Brahman.
लोमश उवाच यवक्रीतमथोक्त्वैवं देवाः साग्निपुरोगमाः संजीवयित्वा तान्सर्वान्पुनर्जग्मुस्त्रिविष्टपम्
M. N. Dutt: Having said this to Yavakrit, the celestials with Indra at their head restored them all to life and went away to heaven.
