द्रुपद उवाच भूतानां प्राणिनः श्रेष्ठाः प्राणिनां बुद्धिजीविनः बुद्धिमत्सु नराः श्रेष्ठा नराणां तु द्विजातयः

M. N. Dutt: Drupada said Of all beings, those that have life are superior. Of those that have life, those that live with the help of their intelligence are superior, those that have intelligence man is superior and among men, those that are twice-born are superior.

द्विजेषु वैद्याः श्रेयांसो वैद्येषु कृतबुद्धयः स भवान्कृतबुद्धीनां प्रधान इति मे मतिः

M. N. Dutt: Among the twice-born, those that know the Vedas are superior and among the Vedaknowing people whose understanding is cultured are superior and among people with cultured understanding those living practical lives are superior and among practical people those that know Brahma are superior.

कुलेन च विशिष्टोऽसि वयसा च श्रुतेन च प्रज्ञयानवमश्चासि शुक्रेणाङ्गिरसेन च

AI Translation: You are distinguished by your family, age, and learning, and you are not inferior to Shukra and Angiras in wisdom.

विदितं चापि ते सर्वं यथावृत्तः स कौरवः पाण्डवश्च यथावृत्तः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः

AI Translation: And you know all about how the Kaurava behaved, and how the Pandava, Kunti's son Yudhishthira, behaved.

धृतराष्ट्रस्य विदिते वञ्चिताः पाण्डवाः परैः विदुरेणानुनीतोऽपि पुत्रमेवानुवर्तते

AI Translation: Dhritarashtra knows that the Pandavas have been cheated by the enemy. Though persuaded by Vidura, he still follows his son.

शकुनिर्बुद्धिपूर्वं हि कुन्तीपुत्रं समाह्वयत् अनक्षज्ञं मताक्षः सन्क्षत्रवृत्ते स्थितं शुचिम्

AI Translation: Shakuni, knowing the truth, challenged the son of Kunti, who was pure in conduct, though he was not skilled in dice.

ते तथा वञ्चयित्वा तु धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् न कस्यांचिदवस्थायां राज्यं दास्यन्ति वै स्वयम्

AI Translation: Having thus deceived Dharma's son, Yudhishthira, they will not give the kingdom to anyone, in any situation, on their own.

भवांस्तु धर्मसंयुक्तं धृतराष्ट्रं ब्रुवन्वचः मनांसि तस्य योधानां ध्रुवमावर्तयिष्यति

AI Translation: But you, speaking words connected with dharma to Dhritarashtra, will certainly turn the minds of his warriors.

विदुरश्चापि तद्वाक्यं साधयिष्यति तावकम् भीष्मद्रोणकृपाणां च भेदं संजनयिष्यति

AI Translation: And Vidura will accomplish your words. He will create a rift between Bhishma, Drona and Kripa.

अमात्येषु च भिन्नेषु योधेषु विमुखेषु च पुनरेकाग्रकरणं तेषां कर्म भविष्यति

AI Translation: And when the ministers are divided and the warriors are disheartened, then the task of uniting them again will be accomplished.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे पार्थाः सुखमेकाग्रबुद्धयः सेनाकर्म करिष्यन्ति द्रव्याणां चैव संचयम्

AI Translation: In the meantime, the Parthas, with single-minded attention, will engage in the work of the army and the accumulation of wealth.

भिद्यमानेषु च स्वेषु लम्बमाने च वै त्वयि न तथा ते करिष्यन्ति सेनाकर्म न संशयः

AI Translation: And when your own army is being broken up, and you are hanging there, they will not fight, I have no doubt.

एतत्प्रयोजनं चात्र प्राधान्येनोपलभ्यते संगत्या धृतराष्ट्रश्च कुर्याद्धर्म्यं वचस्तव

AI Translation: This is the purpose that is primarily perceived here. And Dhritarashtra, through relevance, should speak words that are in accordance with dharma.

स भवान्धर्मयुक्तश्च धर्म्यं तेषु समाचरन् कृपालुषु परिक्लेशान्पाण्डवानां प्रकीर्तयन्

AI Translation: He is righteous and acts righteously towards them, and describes the sufferings of the Pāṇḍavas to the compassionate.

वृद्धेषु कुलधर्मं च ब्रुवन्पूर्वैरनुष्ठितम् विभेत्स्यति मनांस्येषामिति मे नात्र संशयः

AI Translation: Speaking of the family dharma practiced by the elders in the past, I have no doubt that he will divide their minds.

न च तेभ्यो भयं तेऽस्ति ब्राह्मणो ह्यसि वेदवित् दूतकर्मणि युक्तश्च स्थविरश्च विशेषतः

AI Translation: You are not afraid of them, for you are a Brahmin who knows the Vedas, and you are engaged in the work of a messenger, especially as an elder.

स भवान्पुष्ययोगेन मुहूर्तेन जयेन च कौरवेयान्प्रयात्वाशु कौन्तेयस्यार्थसिद्धये

M. N. Dutt: And engaged in the post of an ambassador especially as you are aged. You therefore set out quick for the accomplishment of the interests of the son of Kunti the moment called Jaya and at the position of the planets named Pushya.

वैशंपायन उवाच तथानुशिष्टः प्रययौ द्रुपदेन महात्मना पुरोधा वृत्तसंपन्नो नगरं नागसाह्वयम्

M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said Being instructed in this way by the noblehearted Drupada the priest went to the city called after the elephant.
