संजय उवाच ततो दुर्योधनो द्रोणमभिगम्येदमब्रवीत् अमर्षवशमापन्नो जनयन्हर्षतेजसी
M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Then king Duryodhana, under the influence of anger, approached Drona and addressing him said these word for inspiring him with delight and wrath simultaneously.
न मर्षणीयाः संग्रामे विश्रमन्तः श्रमान्विताः सपत्ना ग्लानमनसो लब्धलक्ष्या विशेषतः
M. N. Dutt: Duryodhana said No quarter should have been granted to our enemies when they were depressed at heart and exhausted with fatigue and taking rest, especially as they are ever of sure aim.
तत्तु मर्षितमस्माभिर्भवतः प्रियकाम्यया त एते परिविश्रान्ताः पाण्डवा बलवत्तराः
M. N. Dutt: That we showed them mercy was only from a desire for pleasing you. The fatigued Pandavas, however, have now (after taking rest) become stronger.
सर्वथा परिहीनाः स्म तेजसा च बलेन च भवता पाल्यमानास्ते विवर्धन्ते पुनः पुनः
M. N. Dutt: We, on the other hand, are becoming reduced in mighty and in energy, while the Pandavas, spared by you, are again and again gaining strength.
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वाणि ब्रह्मास्त्रादीनि यान्यपि तानि सर्वाणि तिष्ठन्ति भवत्येव विशेषतः
M. N. Dutt: All weapons of celestial workmanship and all Brahma weapons are known perfectly to you.
न पाण्डवेया न वयं नान्ये लोके धनुर्धराः युध्यमानस्य ते तुल्याः सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते
M. N. Dutt: Neither the Pandavas, nor ourselves nor any other bowman of the world are equal to you in battle. This I tell you truly.
ससुरासुरगन्धर्वानिमाँल्लोकान्द्विजोत्तम सर्वास्त्रविद्भवान्हन्याद्दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्न संशयः
M. N. Dutt: Conversant with all kinds of weapons O foremost of regenerate ones, you are competent enough to slay with your celestial weapons, the gods, the Asureas, the Gandharvas and all this world.
स भवान्मर्षयत्येनांस्त्वत्तो भीतान्विशेषतः शिष्यत्वं वा पुरस्कृत्य मम वा मन्दभाग्यताम्
M. N. Dutt: The Pandavas are all afraid of you. Yet you always forgive them remembering perhaps that they are your disciples or owing to my unfortunate luck."
एवमुद्धर्षितो द्रोणः कोपितश्चात्मजेन ते समन्युरब्रवीद्राजन्दुर्योधनमिदं वचः
M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Thus reprimanded and incited by your son, Drona, O monarch, wrathfully addressed
स्थविरः सन्परं शक्त्या घटे दुर्योधनाहवे अतः परं मया कार्यं क्षुद्रं विजयगृद्धिना अनस्त्रविदयं सर्वो हन्तव्योऽस्त्रविदा जनः
M. N. Dutt: Although I am advanced in years, yet. ) Duryodhana, I am fighting in battle to the best
यद्भवान्मन्यते चापि शुभं वा यदि वाशुभम् तद्वै कर्तास्मि कौरव्य वचनात्तव नान्यथा
AI Translation: Whatever you think is good or bad, O son of Kuru, I shall do it, not otherwise, at your bidding.
निहत्य सर्वपाञ्चालान्युद्धे कृत्वा पराक्रमम् विमोक्ष्ये कवचं राजन्सत्येनायुधमालभे
AI Translation: Having killed all the Panchālas, having performed valor in battle, I shall release my armor, O king, I take an oath with the weapon.
मन्यसे यच्च कौन्तेयमर्जुनं श्रान्तमाहवे तस्य वीर्यं महाबाहो शृणु सत्येन कौरव
AI Translation: O Kounteya, you think that Arjuna is tired in battle. O mighty-armed one, listen to his valour truthfully, O Kourava.
तं न देवा न गन्धर्वा न यक्षा न च राक्षसाः उत्सहन्ते रणे सोढुं कुपितं सव्यसाचिनम्
AI Translation: The gods, gandharvas, yakshas, and rakshasas are not able to withstand the angry Savyasachin in battle.
खाण्डवे येन भगवान्प्रत्युद्यातः सुरेश्वरः सायकैर्वारितश्चापि वर्षमाणो महात्मना
AI Translation: By whom the Lord of the gods was challenged in Khandava, And who was restrained by arrows even as he was showering down on the noble one,
यक्षा नागास्तथा दैत्या ये चान्ये बलगर्विताः निहताः पुरुषेन्द्रेण तच्चापि विदितं तव
AI Translation: Yakshas, nagas, and demons, and others who are proud of their strength, Have been slain by the Lord of Men, and that too is known to you.
गन्धर्वा घोषयात्रायां चित्रसेनादयो जिताः यूयं तैर्ह्रियमाणाश्च मोक्षिता दृढधन्वना
AI Translation: The Gandharvas, headed by Citrasena, were defeated in the battle of music. You were being carried away by them, but were released by Drdhadhvaja.
निवातकवचाश्चापि देवानां शत्रवस्तथा सुरैरवध्याः संग्रामे तेन वीरेण निर्जिताः
AI Translation: The Nivatakavachas, the enemies of the gods, who were invincible in battle by the gods, were defeated by that hero.
दानवानां सहस्राणि हिरण्यपुरवासिनाम् विजिग्ये पुरुषव्याघ्रः स शक्यो मानुषैः कथम्

प्रत्यक्षं चैव ते सर्वं यथा बलमिदं तव क्षपितं पाण्डुपुत्रेण चेष्टतां नो विशां पते

अहं दुःशासनः कर्णः शकुनिर्मातुलश्च मे हनिष्यामोऽर्जुनं संख्ये द्वैधीकृत्याद्य भारतीम्

AI Translation: But you, being suspicious of everyone, are harsh and determined to do evil. You are intent on doing good to those who are intent on doing good to you, and you wish to speak to them about this and that.
गच्छ त्वमपि कौन्तेयमात्मार्थेभ्यो हि माचिरम् त्वमप्याशंससे योद्धुं कुलजः क्षत्रियो ह्यसि
AI Translation: Go, O son of Kunti, for your own sake, not too long. You also aspire to fight, for you are a Kshatriya born in a noble family.
इमान्किं पार्थिवान्सर्वान्घातयिष्यस्यनागसः त्वमस्य मूलं वैरस्य तस्मादासादयार्जुनम्
AI Translation: Why do you want to kill all these kings, O son of Pandu? You are the root of this enmity, therefore, get hold of Arjuna.
एष ते मातुलः प्राज्ञः क्षत्रधर्ममनुव्रतः दूर्द्यूतदेवी गान्धारिः प्रयात्वर्जुनमाहवे
AI Translation: This your wise maternal uncle, who follows the law of the Kshatriyas, let him go to fight with Arjuna, the gambler, the son of Gandhari.
एषोऽक्षकुशलो जिह्मो द्यूतकृत्कितवः शठः देविता निकृतिप्रज्ञो युधि जेष्यति पाण्डवान्
M. N. Dutt: Expert in the game of dice, crooked, fond of gambling and wily and deceitful-this gamester addicted to deception will surely vanquish the Pandavas in battle!
त्वया कथितमत्यन्तं कर्णेन सह हृष्टवत् असकृच्छून्यवन्मोहाद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य शृण्वतः
M. N. Dutt: Accompanied by Karna and delightful you used to brag always, out of your foolishness, within Dhritarashtra's hearing, with these
अहं च तात कर्णश्च भ्राता दुःशासनश्च मे पाण्डुपुत्रान्हनिष्यामः सहिताः समरे त्रयः
M. N. Dutt: O Sire, myself, Karna and my brother Dussasan, united in battle, shall slay the sons of Pandu!
इति ते कत्थमानस्य श्रुतं संसदि संसदि अनुतिष्ठ प्रतिज्ञां तां सत्यवाग्भव तैः सह
M. N. Dutt: This brag of yours was heard in every assemblage of the court. Now with their help fulfill your vow and be true to your words.
एष ते पाण्डवः शत्रुरविषह्योऽग्रतः स्थितः क्षत्रधर्ममवेक्षस्व श्लाघ्यस्तव वधो जयात्
M. N. Dutt: Yonder stand your fierce enemies, the sons of Pandu, prepared to fight to the last. Do now what should be done by a Kshatriya. It is batter that you did other than suffer defeat.
दत्तं भुक्तमधीतं च प्राप्तमैश्वर्यमीप्सितम् कृतकृत्योऽनृणश्चासि मा भैर्युध्यस्व पाण्डवम्
M. N. Dutt: You have been charitable and enjoyed edibles to your heart's content. You have acquired wealth to your heart's content, you have accomplished all that one should do. You are debtless. Be not afraid. Encounter the son of Pandu battle.
इत्युक्त्वा समरे द्रोणो न्यवर्तत यतः परे द्वैधीकृत्य ततः सेनां युद्धं समभवत्तदा
M. N. Dutt: Having thus spoken Drona desisted from fighting. Then the Bharata troops were divided in twain and the battle commenced.
