जनमेजय उवाच किं कृतं कर्म धर्मेण येन शापमुपेयिवान् कस्य शापाच्च ब्रह्मर्षे शूद्रयोनावजायत

M. N. Dutt: Janamejaya said : What did Dharma (the god of justice) for which he was cursed? Who was the Brahmana Rishi, for whose curse the god had to be born in the womb of Shudra woman?

वैशंपायन उवाच बभूव ब्राह्मणः कश्चिन्माण्डव्य इति विश्रुतः धृतिमान्सर्वधर्मज्ञः सत्ये तपसि च स्थितः

M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : There was a certain Brahmana, who was known as Mandavya. He was learned in all the precepts of virtue; he was devoted to truth and asceticism.

तस्य कालेन महता तस्मिंस्तपसि तिष्ठतः तमाश्रमपदं प्राप्ता दस्यवो लोप्त्रहारिणः अनुसार्यमाणा बहुभी रक्षिभिर्भरतर्षभ

M. N. Dutt: As he passed years together (in that state), one day (some) robbers came to his hermitage with stolen properties.

AI Translation: O best of the Kurus, they hid the thief in his house. And having hidden it, they hid themselves there in fear, when the army arrived.

AI Translation: When they were absorbed, then quickly the army of the protectors came. Then the followers of the robbers saw the sage.

AI Translation: Then, O king, I asked that sage about the incident: "Which path did the robbers take, O best of Brahmins?" "We shall go by that path, O Brahmin, as quickly as we can."

तथा तु रक्षिणां तेषां ब्रुवतां स तपोधनः न किंचिद्वचनं राजन्नवदत्साध्वसाधु वा

M. N. Dutt: O king, having been thus addressed by the guards, the ascetic did not say a word in reply, good or bad.

ततस्ते राजपुरुषा विचिन्वानास्तदाश्रमम् ददृशुस्तत्र संलीनांस्तांश्चोरान्द्रव्यमेव च

M. N. Dutt: Thereupon, the officers of the king, in searching that hermitage, found the thieves with the stolen properties concealed there.

ततः शङ्का समभवद्रक्षिणां तं मुनिं प्रति संयम्यैनं ततो राज्ञे दस्यूंश्चैव न्यवेदयन्

M. N. Dutt: The suspicion of the guards fell upon the Rishi; they seized him with the thieves and brought him before the king.

तं राजा सह तैश्चोरैरन्वशाद्वध्यतामिति स वध्यघातैरज्ञातः शूले प्रोतो महातपाः

M. N. Dutt: The king sentenced him along with the thieves. The guards, acting in ignorance, put the great Rishi also on the Shula (an instrument of death).

ततस्ते शूलमारोप्य तं मुनिं रक्षिणस्तदा प्रतिजग्मुर्महीपालं धनान्यादाय तान्यथ

M. N. Dutt: Having put them (the thieves) and the Rishi on an iron-spit, they returned to the king with the stolen property they had recovered.

शूलस्थः स तु धर्मात्मा कालेन महता ततः निराहारोऽपि विप्रर्षिर्मरणं नाभ्युपागमत् धारयामास च प्राणानृषींश्च समुपानयत्

M. N. Dutt: Though the virtuous-minded Brahmana Rishi remained for many years on the Shula (iron-spit) without food, yet he did not die.

शूलाग्रे तप्यमानेन तपस्तेन महात्मना संतापं परमं जग्मुर्मुनयोऽथ परंतप

AI Translation: The great-souled one was tormented on the tip of the trident. The sages, the tormentors of enemies, became extremely tormented.

M. N. Dutt: Having heard their words, the king after consulting with his ministers, gratified that excellent Rishi fixed on the Shula.

यन्मयापकृतं मोहादज्ञानादृषिसत्तम प्रसादये त्वां तत्राहं न मे त्वं क्रोद्धुमर्हसि

M. N. Dutt: The king said : O best of Rishis, I have offended you out of ignorance. I beseech you, pardon me. You should not be angry with me.

एवमुक्तस्ततो राज्ञा प्रसादमकरोन्मुनिः कृतप्रसादो राजा तं ततः समवतारयत्

AI Translation: Thus addressed by the king, the sage granted his favor. The king, having received the sage's favor, then brought him down.

अवतार्य च शूलाग्रात्तच्छूलं निश्चकर्ष ह अशक्नुवंश्च निष्क्रष्टुं शूलं मूले स चिच्छिदे

AI Translation: And taking it down from the top of the stake, he drew it out. And being unable to draw out the stake, he cut it at the root.

स तथान्तर्गतेनैव शूलेन व्यचरन्मुनिः स तेन तपसा लोकान्विजिग्ये दुर्लभान्परैः अणीमाण्डव्य इति च ततो लोकेषु कथ्यते

M. N. Dutt: The Rishi in that state with Shula practised the austerest penances and he thus conquered by his asceticism many regions difficult to be obtained.

स गत्वा सदनं विप्रो धर्मस्य परमार्थवित् आसनस्थं ततो धर्मं दृष्ट्वोपालभत प्रभुः

AI Translation: Having gone to the abode of Dharma, the brahmin, the knower of the highest truth, saw Dharma seated on a seat and reproached the lord.

किं नु तद्दुष्कृतं कर्म मया कृतमजानता यस्येयं फलनिर्वृत्तिरीदृश्यासादिता मया शीघ्रमाचक्ष्व मे तत्त्वं पश्य मे तपसो बलम्

AI Translation: What evil deed have I done, not knowing, that this fruit has come to me, that this has been attained by me? Quickly tell me the truth, see the power of my asceticism.

धर्म उवाच पतंगकानां पुच्छेषु त्वयेषीका प्रवेशिता कर्मणस्तस्य ते प्राप्तं फलमेतत्तपोधन

M. N. Dutt: Dharma said : O ascetic, a little insect was once pierced by you with a blade of grass; you now receive the fruit of your action.

AI Translation: Āṇḍa-maṇḍavya said: You have imposed a severe punishment on me for a minor offense. You will be born as a human being in the womb of a Śūdra.

मर्यादां स्थापयाम्यद्य लोके धर्मफलोदयाम् आ चतुर्दशमाद्वर्षान्न भविष्यति पातकम् परेण कुर्वतामेवं दोष एव भविष्यति

AI Translation: I am establishing a boundary today for the arising of the fruits of Dharma in the world. From the fourteenth year onwards, there will be no sin. For those who do otherwise, there will only be faults.

वैशंपायन उवाच एतेन त्वपराधेन शापात्तस्य महात्मनः धर्मो विदुररूपेण शूद्रयोनावजायत

M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : Being cursed by that illustrious man for this fault, Dharma was born as Vidura in the womb of a Shudra woman.

धर्मे चार्थे च कुशलो लोभक्रोधविवर्जितः दीर्घदर्शी शमपरः कुरूणां च हिते रतः

M. N. Dutt: He (Vidura) was learned in Dharma and Artha; he was free from avarice and anger; he was fore-seeing, tranquil in mind and ever engaged in doing good to the Kurus.
