वैशंपायन उवाच अथ रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामशेषो नागरो जनः तत्राजगाम त्वरितो दिदृक्षुः पाण्डुनन्दनान्
M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : When the night had passed away a large number of the people of the city came there to see the sons of Pandu.
निर्वापयन्तो ज्वलनं ते जना ददृशुस्ततः जातुषं तद्गृहं दग्धममात्यं च पुरोचनम्
M. N. Dutt: Those men extinguished the fire and saw that the house was made of lac and that the counsellor Purochana had been burnt to death.
नूनं दुर्योधनेनेदं विहितं पापकर्मणा पाण्डवानां विनाशाय इत्येवं चुक्रुषुर्जनाः
M. N. Dutt: The Citizens said : Indeed this sinful act was contrived by the wicked Duryodhana to destroy the sons of Pandu.
विदिते धृतराष्ट्रस्य धार्तराष्ट्रो न संशयः दग्धवान्पाण्डुदायादान्न ह्येनं प्रतिषिद्धवान्
M. N. Dutt: There is on doubt that the son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana ) has burnt to death the heirs of Pandu, with the full knowledge of Dhritarashtra, else he would have been prevented (by his father).
नूनं शांतनवो भीष्मो न धर्ममनुवर्तते द्रोणश्च विदुरश्चैव कृपश्चान्ये च कौरवाः
M. N. Dutt: Indeed, the son of Shantanu (Bhishma,) Drona. Vidura, Kripa and other Kurus have not followed the dictates of duty.

तं च पापं न जानीमो यदि दग्धः पुरोचनः कथं नु विप्रमुच्येम भयादस्मादलक्षिताः
M. N. Dutt: We do not know whether the sinful Purochana has or has not been burnt to death. How shall we escape from the dangers unobserved by others!
पुनरस्मानुपादाय तथैव व्रज भारत त्वं हि नो बलवानेको यथा सततगस्तथा
M. N. Dutt: "O descendant of Bharata, take us on you again and proceed as before. You alone amongst us are strong and (you are) as swift as wind."
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजेन भीमसेनो महाबलः आदाय कुन्तीं भ्रातॄंश्च जगामाशु महाबलः
M. N. Dutt: Having been thus addressed by the king of virtue (Yudhisthira), the greatly strong Bhimasena took his brothers and Kunti (on his body) and walked on.
