M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : Rising from sleep, those best of men (the Pandavas) with their mother were filled with astonishment on seeing the extraordinary beauty of Hidimba.
ततः कुन्ती समीक्ष्यैनां विस्मिता रूपसंपदा उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं शनैः
AI Translation: Then Kunti, seeing her, amazed at her beauty, spoke these gentle words, comforting her, slowly.
कस्य त्वं सुरगर्भाभे का चासि वरवर्णिनि केन कार्येण सुश्रोणि कुतश्चागमनं तव
AI Translation: Who are you, O you who are like the daughter of a god, O you of excellent complexion? For what purpose, O you of beautiful hips, and from where have you come?
यदि वास्य वनस्यासि देवता यदि वाप्सराः आचक्ष्व मम तत्सर्वं किमर्थं चेह तिष्ठसि
M. N. Dutt: Are you the deity of this forest or (are you) an Apsara? Tell me all why you are sitting here."
हिडिम्बोवाच यदेतत्पश्यसि वनं नीलमेघनिभं महत् निवासो राक्षसस्यैतद्धिडिम्बस्य ममैव च
M. N. Dutt: Hidimba said: The blue cloud like great forest that you see is the abode of mine and that of my brother, Rakshasas Hidimba.
तस्य मां राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भगिनीं विद्धि भामिनि भ्रात्रा संप्रेषितामार्ये त्वां सपुत्रां जिघांसता
M. N. Dutt: O amiable lady, know me as being the sister of the Rakshasas chief. O respected madarn, I was sent by my brother to kill you with your sons.
क्रूरबुद्धेरहं तस्य वचनादागता इह अद्राक्षं हेमवर्णाभं तव पुत्रं महौजसम्
M. N. Dutt: Coming here at the command of that cruelminded (Rakshasas), I saw your greatly powerful son of the colour of pure gold.
ततोऽहं सर्वभूतानां भावे विचरता शुभे चोदिता तव पुत्रस्य मन्मथेन वशानुगा
M. N. Dutt: O blessed lady, I was brought under the control of your son by the god of love who pervades the nature of everything.
ततो वृतो मया भर्ता तव पुत्रो महाबलः अपनेतुं च यतितो न चैव शकितो मया
M. N. Dutt: I then chose your greatly powerful son as my husband. Through I tried to suppress this passion, I could not.
चिरायमाणां मां ज्ञात्वा ततः स पुरुषादकः स्वयमेवागतो हन्तुमिमान्सर्वांस्तवात्मजान्
M. N. Dutt: Finding my delay, the cannibal, came in person here to kill all these your sons.
स तेन मम कान्तेन तव पुत्रेण धीमता बलादितो विनिष्पिष्य व्यपकृष्टो महात्मना
M. N. Dutt: But he has been dragged away by your illustrious and intelligent son and my (chosen) husband.
विकर्षन्तौ महावेगौ गर्जमानौ परस्परम् पश्यध्वं युधि विक्रान्तावेतौ तौ नरराक्षसौ
M. N. Dutt: Behold the man and the Rakshasas, both endued with great strength and prowess, (now) engaged in combat, pressing each other with great force and filling the whole region with their roars.

M. N. Dutt: They saw those two (Bhima and Hidimba) already engaged in fight; they were dragging each other, (both) eager to overcome each other like two greatly strong lions.
तावन्योन्यं समाश्लिष्य विकर्षन्तौ परस्परम् दावाग्निधूमसदृशं चक्रतुः पार्थिवं रजः
M. N. Dutt: They clasped and pressed each other again and again. The dust of the earth rose like the smoke of the forest fire.
वसुधारेणुसंवीतौ वसुधाधरसंनिभौ विभ्राजेतां यथा शैलौ नीहारेणाभिसंवृतौ
M. N. Dutt: Covered with the dust of the earth, they, who were like mountains looked like two cliffs enveloped in mists.

M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said : having heard these words (of Arjuna) Bhimasena was inflamed with rage; and dashing him on the ground with all his might, he killed him like beast.
