संवर्त उवाच कथमस्मि त्वया ज्ञातः केन वा कथितोऽस्मि ते एतदाचक्ष्व मे तत्त्वमिच्छसे चेत्प्रियं मम

M. N. Dutt: How nave you come to know me, and who has referred you to ine, do you tell this to me truly, if you desire me to do what is good to you.

सत्यं ते ब्रुवतः सर्वे संपत्स्यन्ते मनोरथाः मिथ्या तु ब्रुवतो मूर्धा सप्तधा ते फलिष्यति

M. N. Dutt: And if you speak truly, you will gain all the objects of your hcart, and should you tell a lie, your head shall be cut into a hundred pieces.

मरुत्त उवाच नारदेन भवान्मह्यमाख्यातो ह्यटता पथि गुरुपुत्रो ममेति त्वं ततो मे प्रीतिरुत्तमा

M. N. Dutt: Marutta said I have been told by Narada, wandering on his way, that you are the son of our familypriest, and this (information) has bent my mind (towards you), with great satisfaction.

संवर्त उवाच सत्यमेतद्भवानाह स मां जानाति सत्रिणम् कथयस्वैतदेकं मे क्व नु संप्रति नारदः

M. N. Dutt: Samvarta said You have told this to me truly, he (Narada) knows me to be a performer of sacrifices, now tell me where is Narada living at present.

मरुत्त उवाच भवन्तं कथयित्वा तु मम देवर्षिसत्तमः ततो मामभ्यनुज्ञाय प्रविष्टो हव्यवाहनम्

M. N. Dutt: Marutta said That king of celestial saints (Narada) having given me this information about you, and commended me to your care, has entered into the fire.

व्यास उवाच श्रुत्वा तु पार्थिवस्यैतत्संवर्तः परया मुदा एतावदहमप्येनं कुर्यामिति तदाब्रवीत्

M. N. Dutt: Vyasa said Hearing these words of the king Marutta, Samvarta was highly pleased, and he said-I too am perfectly able to do all that.

ततो मरुत्तमुन्मत्तो वाचा निर्भर्त्सयन्निव रूक्षया ब्राह्मणो राजन्पुनः पुनरथाब्रवीत्

AI Translation: Then the mad one, as it were, reproaching Marutta with words, The brahmin again and again spoke harshly to the king.

वातप्रधानेन मया स्वचित्तवशवर्तिना एवं विकृतरूपेण कथं याजितुमिच्छसि

AI Translation: "By me who am under the control of my own mind, and who am chiefly of the nature of wind, How do you wish to be worshipped in this distorted form?""

भ्राता मम समर्थश्च वासवेन च सत्कृतः वर्तते याजने चैव तेन कर्माणि कारय

AI Translation: My brother is capable and honored by Vasava. He is engaged in officiating at sacrifices. Have him perform the rites.

गृहं स्वं चैव याज्याश्च सर्वा गृह्याश्च देवताः पूर्वजेन ममाक्षिप्तं शरीरं वर्जितं त्विदम्

AI Translation: My house, my wife, my sacrificial offerings, and all the household deities This body of mine, which was claimed by my elder brother, is now abandoned.

नाहं तेनाननुज्ञातस्त्वामाविक्षित कर्हिचित् याजयेयं कथंचिद्वै स हि पूज्यतमो मम

AI Translation: I have never performed a sacrifice for you, O Avikṣit, without his permission, for he is the most venerable to me.

स त्वं बृहस्पतिं गच्छ तमनुज्ञाप्य चाव्रज ततोऽहं याजयिष्ये त्वां यदि यष्टुमिहेच्छसि

M. N. Dutt: You must therefore go to Brihaspati first, and taking his permission you can return to me, if you have any desire to celebrate a sacrifice, and then only shall I officiate at your sacrifice.

मरुत्त उवाच बृहस्पतिं गतः पूर्वमहं संवर्त तच्छृणु न मां कामयते याज्यमसौ वासववारितः

M. N. Dutt: Marutta said Do you listen to me, O Samvarta, I did go to Brihaspati first, but wishing the patronage of Vasava, he did not wish to have me as his sacrificer.

अमरं याज्यमासाद्य मामृषे मा स्म मानुषम् याजयेथा मरुत्तं त्वं मर्त्यधर्माणमातुरम्

AI Translation: Having obtained me, the immortal, as your priest, O sage, do not think of a human being. You should perform the sacrifice for Marutta, who is mortal and subject to the laws

स्पर्धते च मया विप्र सदा वै स हि पार्थिवः एवमस्त्विति चाप्युक्तो भ्रात्रा ते बलवृत्रहा

AI Translation: And that king always competes with me. And the slayer of Bala and Vritra said to his brother, "Let it be so."

स मामभिगतं प्रेम्णा याज्यवन्न बुभूषति देवराजमुपाश्रित्य तद्विद्धि मुनिपुंगव

M. N. Dutt: Know, O best of ascetics, that as he had succeeded in getting the protection of the King of the Celestials, I went to him with gratified heart, but he did not agree to act as my priest.

सोऽहमिच्छामि भवता सर्वस्वेनापि याजितुम् कामये समतिक्रान्तुं वासवं त्वत्कृतैर्गुणैः

M. N. Dutt: And thus repulsed, I now wish to spend all I possess, to have this sacrifice performed by you, and to outstrip Vasava by the merit of your good offices.

न हि मे वर्तते बुद्धिर्गन्तुं ब्रह्मन्बृहस्पतिम् प्रत्याख्यातो हि तेनास्मि तथानपकृते सति

M. N. Dutt: As I have been repulsed by Brihaspati for no fault of mine, I have now no desire, O Brahmana, to go to him to scek his help in this sacrifice.

संवर्त उवाच चिकीर्षसि यथाकामं सर्वमेतत्त्वयि ध्रुवम् यदि सर्वानभिप्रायान्कर्तासि मम पार्थिव

AI Translation: Sanvarta said: Whatever you desire, all this is certainly yours. O king, if you fulfill all my wishes,

याज्यमानं मया हि त्वां बृहस्पतिपुरंदरौ द्विषेतां समभिक्रुद्धावेतदेकं समर्थय

AI Translation: "O you who are being worshipped by me, O you who are the two who are the best of the two, Brihaspati and Indra, You two who are very angry with the enemy, please support this one."

स्थैर्यमत्र कथं ते स्यात्स त्वं निःसंशयं कुरु कुपितस्त्वां न हीदानीं भस्म कुर्यां सबान्धवम्

M. N. Dutt: Therefore, do you assure me of your steadfastness, so as to ensure my coolness and constancy as otherwise, if I am filled with anger against you, I shall reduce (destroy) you and your kindred to ashes.

मरुत्त उवाच यावत्तपेत्सहस्रांशुस्तिष्ठेरंश्चापि पर्वताः तावल्लोकान्न लभेयं त्यजेयं संगतं यदि

AI Translation: Marutta said: As long as the thousand-rayed sun shines and the mountains stand, For that long I would not attain the worlds if I were to abandon my association.

मा चापि शुभबुद्धित्वं लभेयमिह कर्हिचित् सम्यग्ज्ञाने वैषये वा त्यजेयं संगतं यदि

AI Translation: May I never attain a good intellect here, If I were to abandon association with the object of right knowledge.

संवर्त उवाच आविक्षित शुभा बुद्धिर्धीयतां तव कर्मसु याजनं हि ममाप्येवं वर्तते त्वयि पार्थिव

AI Translation: Sanvarta said: O Avikṣita, let your mind be good in your deeds. For, O king, it is also my duty to perform sacrifices for you.

संविधास्ये च ते राजन्नक्षयं द्रव्यमुत्तमम् येन देवान्सगन्धर्वाञ्शक्रं चाभिभविष्यसि

AI Translation: And I will arrange for you, O king, inexhaustible wealth of the best kind, by which you will surpass the gods, gandharvas, and Shakra.

न तु मे वर्तते बुद्धिर्धने याज्येषु वा पुनः विप्रियं तु चिकीर्षामि भ्रातुश्चेन्द्रस्य चोभयोः

M. N. Dutt: For myself, I have no wish to hoard riches or sacrificial presents; I shall only do what is disagrecable to both Indra and my brother.

गमयिष्यामि चेन्द्रेण समतामपि ते ध्रुवम् प्रियं च ते करिष्यामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते

M. N. Dutt: I shall certainly make you attain equality with Shakra, and I tell you truly that I shall do what is agreeable to you.
