वैशंपायन उवाच सैवं विलप्य करुणं सोन्मादेव तपस्विनी उत्तरा न्यपतद्भूमौ कृपणा पुत्रगृद्धिनी
M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said The helpless Uttara, desirous of getting back her child, having thus bewailed, dropped down in sorrow on the earth like demented creature.
तां तु दृष्ट्वा निपतितां हतबन्धुपरिच्छदाम् चुक्रोश कुन्ती दुःखार्ता सर्वाश्च भरतस्त्रियः
M. N. Dutt: Sceing the princess fallen on the earth deprived of her son and with her body uncovered, Kunti as also all the (other) Bharata-ladies, deeply afflicted, began to weep aloud.
मुहूर्तमिव तद्राजन्पाण्डवानां निवेशनम् अप्रेक्षणीयमभवदार्तस्वरनिनादितम्
M. N. Dutt: Resounding with the voice of lamentation the palace of the Pandavas, O king, was soon converted into a house of sorrow where nobody could remain.
सा मुहूर्तं च राजेन्द्र पुत्रशोकाभिपीडिता कश्मलाभिहता वीर वैराटी त्वभवत्तदा
M. N. Dutt: Greatly stricken with grief on account of her son, Virata's daughter, O king, seemed to be struck down for sometime by sorrow and cheerlessness.
प्रतिलभ्य तु सा संज्ञामुत्तरा भरतर्षभ अङ्कमारोप्य तं पुत्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
M. N. Dutt: Regaining consciousness, O chief of Bharata's race, Uttara took up her child on her lap and said these words.
धर्मज्ञस्य सुतः संस्त्वमधर्ममवबुध्यसे यस्त्वं वृष्णिप्रवीरस्य कुरुषे नाभिवादनम्
M. N. Dutt: You are the child of one who knew every duty. Are you not conscious then of the sin you commit, since you do not salute this foremost one of the Vrishni's race?
पुत्र गत्वा मम वचो ब्रूयास्त्वं पितरं तव दुर्मरं प्राणिनां वीर काले प्राप्ते कथंचन
AI Translation: Son, go and tell your father my words: "O hero, death is difficult for living beings, but it comes inevitably at the right time."
याहं त्वया विहीनाद्य पत्या पुत्रेण चैव ह मर्तव्ये सति जीवामि हतस्वस्तिरकिंचना
AI Translation: "I, who am bereft of you, my husband, and my son, " "Though I must die, I live, bereft of happiness, bereft of all."
अथ वा धर्मराज्ञाहमनुज्ञाता महाभुज भक्षयिष्ये विषं तीक्ष्णं प्रवेक्ष्ये वा हुताशनम्
M. N. Dutt: O mighty-armed one, with the permission of king Yudhishthira the just. I shall swallow some dreadful poison or cast myself on the burning fire.
अथ वा दुर्मरं तात यदिदं मे सहस्रधा पतिपुत्रविहीनाया हृदयं न विदीर्यते
M. N. Dutt: O father, difficult of destruction is my heart since, though I am deprived of husband and child, that heart of mine does not brcak into a thousand pieces.
उत्तिष्ठ पुत्र पश्येमां दुःखितां प्रपितामहीम् आर्तामुपप्लुतां दीनां निमग्नां शोकसागरे
M. N. Dutt: Rise, O son, and see this your afflicted great grandmother! She is deeply stricken with grief, bathed in tears, exceedingly cheerless, and plunged in an ocean of sorrow.
आर्यां च पश्य पाञ्चालीं सात्वतीं च तपस्विनीम् मां च पश्य सुदुःखार्तां व्याधविद्धां मृगीमिव
M. N. Dutt: See the reverend princess of Panchala, and the helpless princess of the Sattata race! Look at myself, exceedingly afflicted with grief, and resembling a deer pierced by a hunter.
उत्तिष्ठ पश्य वदनं लोकनाथस्य धीमतः पुण्डरीकपलाशाक्षं पुरेव चपलेक्षणम्
M. N. Dutt: Rise, O child, and look at the face of this king, who is gifted with great wisdom, and possessed of eyes like lotus-petals and resembling your father of restless glances.
एवं विप्रलपन्तीं तु दृष्ट्वा निपतितां पुनः उत्तरां ताः स्त्रियः सर्वाः पुनरुत्थापयन्त्युत
M. N. Dutt: Seeing Uttara, whey bewailed thus, fallen on the earth, all those ladies, raising her, caused her to sit up.
उत्थाय तु पुनर्धैर्यात्तदा मत्स्यपतेः सुता प्राञ्जलिः पुण्डरीकाक्षं भूमावेवाभ्यवादयत्
M. N. Dutt: Having sat up, the daughter of the king of the Matsyas, summoning her patience, joined her hands in respect and touched the earth with her head for saluting Keshava having eyes like lotus petals.
श्रुत्वा स तस्या विपुलं विलापं पुरुषर्षभः उपस्पृश्य ततः कृष्णो ब्रह्मास्त्रं संजहार तत्
M. N. Dutt: Hearing those heart-rending lamentations of hers, that foremost of persons touched water and withdrew the (force of the Brahmaweapon.
प्रतिजज्ञे च दाशार्हस्तस्य जीवितमच्युतः अब्रवीच्च विशुद्धात्मा सर्वं विश्रावयञ्जगत्
AI Translation: And the son of Dasharha promised him life, O unaging one. And the pure-souled one spoke, proclaiming all to the world.
न ब्रवीम्युत्तरे मिथ्या सत्यमेतद्भविष्यति एष संजीवयाम्येनं पश्यतां सर्वदेहिनाम्
AI Translation: I do not speak falsely to the north. This will be true. I will revive him before the eyes of all embodied beings.
नोक्तपूर्वं मया मिथ्या स्वैरेष्वपि कदाचन न च युद्धे परावृत्तस्तथा संजीवतामयम्
M. N. Dutt: Never before have I uttered a falschood even in just. Never have I turned back from battle. (By the merit of those deeds) let this child revive.
यथा मे दयितो धर्मो ब्राह्मणाश्च विशेषतः अभिमन्योः सुतो जातो मृतो जीवत्वयं तथा
M. N. Dutt: As virtue is dear to me, as Brahmanas are especially dear to me, let Abhimanyu's son, who is born dead, revive.
यथाहं नाभिजानामि विजयेन कदाचन विरोधं तेन सत्येन मृतो जीवत्वयं शिशुः
M. N. Dutt: Never has a misunderstanding arisen between me and my friend Vijaya. Let this dead child revive by that truth.
यथा सत्यं च धर्मश्च मयि नित्यं प्रतिष्ठितौ तथा मृतः शिशुरयं जीवतामभिमन्युजः
M. N. Dutt: As truth and virtue are always established in me, let this dead child of Abhimanyu revive.
यथा कंसश्च केशी च धर्मेण निहतौ मया तेन सत्येन बालोऽयं पुनरुज्जीवतामिह
M. N. Dutt: As Kansa and Keshi have been righteously killed by me, let this child revive today by that truth.
