M. N. Dutt: Virata said O foremost of Pandavas, why do you not wish to accept, as your wife, my daughter whom I wish to confer upon you?
अर्जुन उवाच अन्तःपुरेऽहमुषितः सदा पश्यन्सुतां तव रहस्यं च प्रकाशं च विश्वस्ता पितृवन्मयि
M. N. Dutt: Arjuna said Living in your inner apartment, I always saw your daughter. Alone or before all, she always used to confide in me as her father.
प्रियो बहुमतश्चाहं नर्तको गीतकोविदः आचार्यवच्च मां नित्यं मन्यते दुहिता तव
M. N. Dutt: Well-versed in dancing and singing, I was always loved and much liked by her. Your daughter always regards me as her preceptor.
वयःस्थया तया राजन्सह संवत्सरोषितः अतिशङ्का भवेत्स्थाने तव लोकस्य चाभिभो
M. N. Dutt: O king, I lived for one year with her who is youthful. O lord, you or your men may therefore suspect me.
तस्मान्निमन्त्रये त्वाहं दुहितुः पृथिवीपते शुद्धो जितेन्द्रियो दान्तस्तस्याः शुद्धिः कृता मया
M. N. Dutt: O king, I, therefore, wish to have your daughter as my daughter-in-law-pure, selfcontrolled, I am. I thus prove her purity.
स्नुषाया दुहितुर्वापि पुत्रे चात्मनि वा पुनः अत्र शङ्कां न पश्यामि तेन शुद्धिर्भविष्यति
M. N. Dutt: There is no difference between a daughter and a daughter-in-law as that between one's ownself and a son. I do not find any fear in it-for by it purity will be proved.
अभिषङ्गादहं भीतो मिथ्याचारात्परंतप स्नुषार्थमुत्तरां राजन्प्रतिगृह्णामि ते सुताम्
M. N. Dutt: O king, I am afraid of curses and false accusation. O king, I shall therefore accept your daughter Uttara as my daughter-in-law.
स्वस्रीयो वासुदेवस्य साक्षाद्देवशिशुर्यथा दयितश्चक्रहस्तस्य बाल एवास्त्रकोविदः
M. N. Dutt: A nephew of Vasudeva, like a very celestials boy-my son, who has mastered all weapons, is the favourite of the holder of discus.
अभिमन्युर्महाबाहुः पुत्रो मम विशां पते जामाता तव युक्तो वै भर्ता च दुहितुस्तव
M. N. Dutt: O king, my son is the mighty-armed Abhimanyu. He is a proper son-in-law for you and husband for you daughter.
विराट उवाच उपपन्नं कुरुश्रेष्ठे कुन्तीपुत्रे धनंजये य एवं धर्मनित्यश्च जातज्ञानश्च पाण्डवः
M. N. Dutt: Virata said It is indeed proper for the foremost of Kurus, Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti, always virtuous and wise, to say this.
यत्कृत्यं मन्यसे पार्थ क्रियतां तदनन्तरम् सर्वे कामाः समृद्धा मे संबन्धी यस्य मेऽर्जुनः
M. N. Dutt: O Partha, do what you think proper after this. He, who has a relationship with Arjuna, has all his desires fulfilled.
वैशंपायन उवाच एवं ब्रुवति राजेन्द्रे कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः अन्वजानात्स संयोगं समये मत्स्यपार्थयोः
M. N. Dutt: Vaishampayana said After the king had said this, Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, gave his assent to the alliance between Matsya and Partha.

M. N. Dutt: O descendant of Bharata, then the son of Kunti sent invitations to all his friends and Vasudeva, and so did the king Virata.
